Innovative Works: Rose Moss, Law Firm Partner, Mum and Leader in her Field
Rose Moss has been striving for balance her whole career. As a Commercial Property solicitor, she enjoyed the cut and thrust of the dynamic and fast moving legal sector in London, Manchester and Liverpool. In her early career this often came hand-in-hand with a presenteeism approach in the office. “You were not always valued for what you achieved but for how long you sat at your desk” she explains. It sometimes felt impossible to keep her love of the law going alongside a happy and balanced young family with two busy working lawyers as parents. At times she felt she was not doing justice to either. She faced an epiphany moment when she was managing a multimillion-pound purchase of new head offices for a national fashion chain, whilst sat in her car at the supermarket car park.
In 2018 Rose was thrilled to join Jolliffes solicitors in Chester, a Law Firm with a long history but also very modern and adaptive views. She swapped her 4 hours a day commute to really get to know her local business community. Rose was then able to break through the glass ceiling in a Law Firm who valued what she could offer, and didn’t focus on how many hours she sat at her desk to do it in.
“One of the good things that could come from the changes caused by this pandemic is that we move away from the all or nothing approach” suggests Rose. She is grateful we have had an opportunity to take a wider, flexible long-term view of our working environments as well as our working practices and hopes we keep the positive changes which have been bought about in the last year. She is more than aware that the novelty of home working has worn off for many. We are sociable people, who thrive in the community environment of an office, working and growing together. Keeping the ability to do some remote working will have a positive impact when we are able to go back into the much missed office, but importantly there should not be a return to the idea of being present at your desk, whatever your productivity. The increased use of flexible video conferencing, the acceptance and visibility of people’s personal lives in the business sphere has really bought the human face of business into focus.
We all understand, even more now, the importance of strong and healthy families as well as the need for a business community and a fulfilling career to grow the future.
“For me”, Rose says, “working and embracing “local” brought balance in my life. Jolliffes are a Law Firm all about people. We value our staff, and our staff value our clients.” Many people suggested that the office lettings sector, which forms part of the diverse property law practice in which Rose works, was in severe decline in April 2020. At that time, many law firms made redundancies in her sector. “Jolliffes didn’t”, Rose explains, “Jolliffes believes its mission statement - “Our Why is You”. It helps us to focus on individuals, building their resilience, and enabling staff, like me, to find the best way to do their jobs and reach their goals. That ensures that the Jolliffes team offer to our clients, what the firm offers to them, an individual, flexible and collaborative approach, be it for buying a dream home, navigating a tricky divorce, selling your company or finding new business premises”.
Rose suggests offices will always remain a crucial business asset, as a hub to meet, to promote productivity and communication. If we also continue flexible business practices going forward, use video conferencing and some remote working, it will help keep future business growth, and positive family lives, sustainable for many.
Last week, in one day, Rose was in meetings with clients who were in Amsterdam wanting help with their Landlord, buying properties in Cheshire and talking taxes with accountants in London - all the while managing her children’s Zoom lessons timetable. Rose hopes that keeping the best of the last year’s changes in business practices will help other young inspiring career men and women to balance their lives. Continuing to embrace a flexible approach to home and office working, once out of lockdown, enables people like Rose to step up, build their careers, create happy lives and a thriving business community.
