A Century of Global Connections
As Lufthansa Group marks its centurion, we explore some of the leading European corporate destinations from Manchester Airport, the UK’s global gateway in the north
Leading German aviation company, Lufthansa Group, is celebrating an impressive 70 years of flights from Manchester this April, alongside an incredible 100 years as an airline this year. Lufthansa’s story began in Berlin on 6 January 1926 when two airlines, Junkers Luftverkehr and Deutscher Aero Lloyd, merged to create Luft Hansa, later renamed Lufthansa. On 6 April 1926 Luft Hansa took to the skies for its first flights, with two aircraft departing Berlin-Tempelhof Airport bound for Zurich and Cologne.
The group began operating from Manchester Airport in May 1956. The inaugural service started from Hamburg and then called at Düsseldorf on its way to Manchester. On leaving Manchester the Lockheed L-1049 G Super Constellation aircraft then crossed the Atlantic to Montreal, finally continuing on to Chicago.
Today, the Lufthansa Group is one of the four largest airlines worldwide and the largest airline group in Europe. The group continues to offer an appealing choice for both business and leisure travellers from Manchester Airport, providing over 60 flights per week to European business hubs such as Frankfurt and Brussels, offering the convenience of local departures while avoiding the need to travel via London. Below, we highlight key Lufthansa Group routes for those looking to travel for business in Europe this spring.
