A taste of Tokyo in the Northern Quarter
Taking over the North Star Piccadilly on Dale Street, the brunch café by day transforms into a cosy, intimate, izakaya at night, a social spot to eat, drink and relax. NIWA Yakitori is a Japanese dining concept and is the first of its kind in Manchester to specialise in Yakitori. NIWA (meaning garden) and Yakitori (a refined style of skewered chicken) was born following inspiration from the owners trips to Japan, where they first experienced Yakitori in the backstreets of Tokyo.
Using the finest ingredients to honour Japanese tradition, NIWA chefs expertly prepare, skewer and grill a variety of simple ingredients over Japanese oak charcoal, elevating them into incredibly succulent, flavourful dishes. NIWA have perfected the precise butchering techniques necessary for preparing each part of the chicken. All the specially prepared pieces are carefully skewered and grilled at high temperatures to seal in the flavour while enhancing the ingredients’ natural tastes.
The ‘NIWA Yakitori Experience’ menu includes 6 classic chicken skewers or flavourful vegetable dishes for £36pp, served with miso soup, steamed sushi rice and grilled pineapple. All the chicken dishes were amazing, but my favourites were the ‘Sabi’ tender with yuzu wasabi and ‘Nerima’ thigh with spring onion and house Tare sauce.
If you are undecided from the options and extras on the menu, you can leave the choices to the chef with the ‘Omakase Experience’ where for £55pp, the NIWA team will present a collection of dishes across the menu. And to accompany your meal, you have the option of adding a sake flight or a wine pairing, with some delicious wines that perfectly complement the dishes.
In stark contrast to some of Manchester’s glitzy Japanese restaurants, NIWAs warmth and personal touch really stands out. For me, the relaxed environment made it a much more enjoyable experience. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, Jenny and the team will guide you through the menu and provide an exceptional, friendly service. Be sure to save some space for the homemade matcha chocolate and desserts, and of course, it would be rude not to finish with a sake.
