A Vibrant Island Escape

A Vibrant Island Escape

Michael Gates travelled to a private island in the North Malé Atoll of the Maldives to experience OBLU Xperience Ailafushi

Location

Set within the crystal clear waters of the North Malé Atoll, and just a 15 minute complimentary speedboat transfer from Velana International Airport, OBLU Xperience Ailafushi offers a vibrant introduction to the Maldives. Surrounded by turquoise waters and soft white sands, the island blends natural beauty with a lively, modern atmosphere.

Concept

In the Dhivehi language, ‘Aila’ means family and ‘Fushi’ means island, a fitting description for this relaxed, warm and inclusive resort designed for couples, families or groups of friends. The signature Fushi Plan combines dining, drinks and selected activities into one seamless offering, delivering excellent value without compromising quality, comfort or style.

Rooms

The resort features 268 villas across four categories, each thoughtfully designed with a fresh, modern aesthetic.

Beach Villas are just steps from the shoreline, complete with private verandas, outdoor showers and warm wooden interiors that create a comfortable retreat after a day in the sun.

Shaped like traditional Maldivian ‘dhonis’ boats, Water Villas stretch out over the lagoon and offer direct access to the ocean from a private deck, ideal for those wanting the quintessential overwater experience.

For families, the Ocean View Family Two Bedroom Duplex Villas provide a clever use of space, with bunk beds and playful décor for children alongside a stylish master bedroom. The Ocean View Rooms offer a more compact yet well-designed option, making this resort particularly appealing for travellers seeking a more accessible Maldivian stay.

Food and Drink

Dining centres around Element X, the resort’s all-day restaurant serving international cuisine with Indian Ocean and South-East Asian influences. Expansive buffet selections and live cooking stations offer variety and a sense of occasion at every meal.

The X360 Bar, located beside the infinity pool, is the social heartbeat of the resort. Live music and DJ sets create a relaxed yet energetic ambience that flows effortlessly from afternoon cocktails into lively evenings.

For something a little more special, guests can reserve a table at Only BLU, the Maldives’ largest under-ocean restaurant. Set beneath the waterline, the horseshoe-shaped dining room offers a unique culinary experience surrounded by marine life. Alternatively, the Copper Pot Food Truck offers a more casual beachfront setting, specialising in grilled seafood and meats served beneath the stars.

Facilities

For active travellers, the resort provides a fully equipped overwater gym, daily organised activities and non-motorised water sports including kayaking and paddleboarding. The PADI and SSI-certified dive centre provides snorkelling and scuba excursions suitable for all levels. Families are well catered for at Kids Club, a multi-level children’s club featuring a dedicated pool, games and supervised daily activities.

The serene ELE|NA Ayur Spa offers holistic treatments inspired by natural elements, with indoor and outdoor spaces designed for complete rejuvenation. Bringing a cosmopolitan touch to island life, La Promenade adds a contemporary social dimension, with cafés, boutique retail outlets and curated wine selections.

My Experience

From the moment we stepped off the speedboat, we were warmly welcomed by the attentive team. After a smooth check-in and refreshing welcome drink, we were escorted by buggy to our Water Villa. The villa was spacious and beautifully designed, with colourful interiors and breathtaking views. Although we were eager to explore the island, we could not resist taking a dip in the Maldivian sea and watching the sun set into the horizon before we ventured out to explore.

Navigating the island was easy, whether strolling along the pathways and jetties or hopping into one of the passing buggies; everything was conveniently within reach. After finding our way around, we headed for dinner at Element X, where we enjoyed most of our meals. The variety and quality were impressive and the live cooking stations brought an interactive energy to the dining experience.

During our stay, we also dined at The Copper Pot Food Truck, enjoying a beautiful candlelit dinner under the stars. The menu features a variety of seafood, meat and vegetable grills, but we opted for the special lobster dinner, which included a rich lobster bisque followed by grilled Maldivian lobster. We also experienced our first underwater dining adventure at Only Blu. With a three course menu offering plenty of choice and a window seat overlooking the coral reef and marine life. Both were real highlights.

Days were balanced between activity and relaxation. From snorkelling around the lagoon and exploring the reef to unwinding with a restorative 60-minute massage at ELE|NA Ajur Spa, which provided a sense of calm after a long journey. There was always a chilled vibe around the island, even with all the activities and adventure, it never felt intrusive.

OBLU Xperience Ailafushi offers a fantastic introduction to the Maldives. With its convenient location, lively atmosphere and well-structured Fushi Plan, the resort delivers a seamless holiday experience. Whilst optional dining and activity upgrades are available, the plan alone provides more than enough to create a truly unforgettable experience.
