Britain's Favourtie Caribbean Island
From its first British settlers in the 1620s through to full independence in 1966, Barbados has a remarkable history with Britain, one that is woven into its very fabric
Barbados and the UK have a longstanding historic relationship which dates back to the 17th century; this relationship is complex and is just one of many that contribute to the island’s rich history and heritage.
In 1625, The first English ship arrived in Barbados, Captain John Powell and his crew were sailing from Brazil to England and went off course, due to a navigational error. Powell found the island to be uninhabited and claimed the island in the name of King James 1 of England. On February 17th, 1627 a second voyage, led by his brother Henry saw a group of English settlers land in ‘St James Town’ which is situated in present-day Holetown in the Saint James district.
Barbados became officially independent on 30 November 1966, and since this time the relationship between Britain and the island has remained strong. From the point of settlement until Barbadian independence, Barbados remained the only Caribbean island to never change hands between other European nations. The British influence can still be felt today, most notably in the language spoken (English), but also the red post boxes found across the island, the names of various places on island and the fact islanders still drive on the left side of the road.

Ann’s Fort
Built in 1705, this military base was named after Her Majesty Queen, Ann. Currently, it is home to the Barbados Defence Force, and The Barbados National Armoury Museum, which possesses the only Elizabethan cannon known in existence.
National Heroes Square
In 1813 at this site, the Barbados Government in an effort to celebrate the victory gained in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805 unveiled the statue of Lord Nelson, who had visited the island during that period. This statue has since been relocated.
Parliament Building
Built in 1874, in the neo-Gothic architectural style, this historic building is home to the House of Assembly and Senate of Barbados. Visit the west wing and you’ll find The Barbados Museum of Parliament and the Barbados National Heroes Gallery.
Garrison Savannah
What was once the British military parade ground, since 1845 this historic site has been home to oldest operating horse racing track in the western world. It began when military officers raced their horses against the wealthy merchants of the day.
The Barbados Museum
Established in 1930, it is housed in what was once the British Military Prison. It showcases artifacts of the Amerindians, the island’s natural history, 18th-century plantation house furnishings, a rare historical map of the island and so much more.
