An award-winning Mancunian artist has unveiled a new mural inspired by the multicultural and diverse residents at leisure and hospitality destination, the Corn Exchange.

Alexandra Gallagherโ€™s mural, which forms a walkway between the Corn Exchangeโ€™s spectacular atrium and Cathedral Gardens, features flora, fauna and creatures inspired by the global cuisine offered by the onsite bars, cafes and restaurants and the spirit of the building itself.

Features within the artwork include banana leaves, monkeys, parrots, poppies and swans.

The artwork has been launched ahead of the siteโ€™s fifth anniversary, which will be celebrated via offers and competitions, including the chance to win a piece of Alexandraโ€™s work, throughout August 2020.

Alexandra is a renowned artist who has won a Saatchi award as well as exhibiting at the world-famous London gallery of the same name. She works via a number of mediums ranging from paint and photography, through to street art and collages. Inspiration for her work includes everything from the natural world through to old masters and even dreams.

Commenting on her artwork at the Corn Exchange, Alexandra said: โ€œ

โ€œIt was fantastic to draw upon the global nature of my home city, along with the worldwide menu of the Corn Exchangeโ€™s resident restaurants when it came to creating this piece. Nature plays a huge part in my work and It gave me the opportunity to place plants and animals from around the world within the artwork, celebrating not just the Corn Exchange, but the multicultural cosmopolitan vibe of Manchester too.

โ€œThe Corn Exchange is such an iconic landmark for Manchester and I was really excited with the opportunity to create a modern piece of art that could complement the Victorian splendour of the siteโ€™s beautiful atrium. I hope it brings a smile to visitorsโ€™ faces for years to come and helps make for some memorable trips.โ€

Alexandraโ€™s artwork is on show at the Corn Exchange now and details of the siteโ€™s anniversary celebrations will be announced shortly.
