English National Ballet - Swan Lake
Katie Barrell visited The Palace Theatre in Manchester to see the English National Ballet - Swan Lake
The majestic English National Ballet are performing the world’s most popular ballet Swan Lake at Manchester’s Palace theatre. The classic ballet is currently 140 years old and yet it still feels contemporary and magical, whilst being familiar, in this interpretation by the renowned Choreographer Derek Deane and Musical Director Gavin Sutherland.
The audience were captivated from the beginning, with the opening scene between the princess Odette and the evil sorcerer Rothbart right through until the final scenes with princess Odette and prince Siegfried.
The company all excel in bringing the characters and story to life through the scenes building to the drama of the final lakeside moments. Through each dance, the ballerinas on point were perfectly coordinated and captivated the audience so much you could hear their delicate point shoes on the stage. During the interval, the conversations around us were of the strength of the dancers who were as expected composed and precise in the moves they were all making.
This performance was the perfect introduction for a first time viewer of the ballet, for young people aspiring to dance and for veteran ballet audiences alike.
