Fashion Forward with Martine Alexander
Martine Alexander, Celebrity Stylist and Wardrobe Concierge, offers her expert fashion advice on the ultimate in love ceremonies – the wedding, and what to wear as a guest
Before I impart my spring/summer 2022 favourite pieces for a spring wedding, I wanted to say hi, and that I’m thrilled to be a part of The Cheshire Magazine’s team. I’m here for you, and if you have any specific fashion conundrums or styling dilemmas, get in touch.
When it comes to weddings, some bridal parties will provide a dress code, which can be helpful to some, but cause unnecessary panic to others, especially if getting glam isn’t in your nature. Either way, the dress code is there to help you – do you go ‘as you are’, ‘evening glam’, ‘black tie’ or even ‘white tie’? The invite should state, but if in any doubt, ask the bride for some clarity. The one no-no, unless stated on the invite is, don’t wear white, cream or ivory – obvious I know, but some people have been known to match the bride.
I’m also a great believer that we should get value for money from our clothes and be able to wear them more than once so I love this nude Oscar De La Renta dress, which could be teamed with a nude heel for a classic look, and then reworn with ivory or a pop of colour for another event.
If you don’t suit gold tones like the Oscar De La Renta dress, then The Vampire’s Wife dress is a great option as it’s so versatile. For a wedding, wear a blush, ivory or nude heel, then for a night out, add a metallic heel or a pop of fuchsia pink. Equally, add black patterned tights and a boot and you’re ready for date night.
Summer wedding outfits tend to be a lot brighter in colour, which is why I chose this Erdem dress. It’s spring ready and not too bright for you to stand out too much. Plus, once you’ve worn it for a wedding, change the heel for a fresh sneaker and it’s instantly a stylish, effortless day dress.
What I’ve Been Up To…
This month, I’ve been styling Strictly Come Dancing winner Kelvin Fletcher and his wife Liz for their TV appearances to promote their new BBC1 show Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure. They’re just such lovely people and as much as it’s a challenge dressing a pregnant bump, it’s fun too.
