How Steel Windows Boost your Home’s Efficiency

A recent investigation looking closely at consumer attitudes towards greener homes discovered that one in five homeowners are planning to improve the sustainability of their property in the next 12 months.

To support those who are keen to make more eco-conscious decisions about their home, leading steel window and door manufacturer Crittall Windows is exploring which home improvement products can make a significant difference to the overall energy efficiency of a property.

Russell Ager, MD of Crittall Windows, comments: “As a company which has been investing heavily in reducing our own carbon emissions, it’s fantastic to see that homeowners are also looking to make some positive changes with their property.

“However, knowing where to start can feel daunting, especially with so many eco-friendly home improvement products on the market. While many people may think solar panels and heat pumps are the best solution, updating your windows and doors with high quality, sustainable replacements can lead to some impressive results.”

As the focal point of a property, windows and doors don’t just impact the overall look and value of a home, but they also play a significant role in its energy efficiency, as Russell explains.

“How well a window or door performs is incredibly important as this will indicate if it can successfully retain heat within a home. We’d always recommend looking closely at the DSER and WER ratings of a window and door before deciding because this measurement considers everything from the air infiltration to solar gain. Ultimately, any window or door with a rating of A++ will be the most efficient and lead to the best improvements.”

Cost of work required is too expensive

Although the research highlights that the second most popular green lifestyle choice for homeowners involves minimising energy use, the same investigation also found people believe the costs of the work required is too high – preventing them from investing.

“Making changes to your home is an expensive process so always consider the lifetime cost and potential savings you’ll see over the years before making a final decision,” highlights Russell.

“While steel windows and doors are more expensive than alternative materials, they are more durable and last in excess of 60 years. What’s more with a reduced likeliness of replacements and repairs, the long term cost of steel is actually incredibly competitive.”

Another factor which contributes to the long-term value of steel windows are their impressive sustainability credentials as Russell explains.

“At Crittall Windows, all of our steel profiles are made from 100% recycled source and they can be recycled at end of life. This makes them a worthwhile investment for eco-conscious homeowners looking for an aesthetically pleasing and long lasting solution.”

Modern windows and doors for UK homes

With a passion to manufacture high quality products, Crittall Windows is continuously evolving its product range. In fact, the team has just released a brand new steel system which delivers outstanding thermal performance, positively contributing to a home’s efficiency credentials.

“Thanks to incredible advances in manufacturing processes, modern steel windows and doors are a fantastic thermally enhanced, energy efficient solution for UK homes,” adds Russell.

“Our latest product, Corporate W20 TE®, has been specially designed to improve the energy efficiency of a property, without compromising on the slim sightlines synonymous with our steel windows and doors. With UW & UD values of 1.4 W/m²K, homeowners will be investing in home improvement products which flood their home with natural light and perform to the highest standard.

“Plus, as a highly recyclable material, homeowners can feel confident they’re making a responsible home improvement choice by choosing to install steel windows and doors in their property.”
