Millennial Tech Entrepreneurs
Investment managers Carl Mitchell and Simone Bilton are helping tech entrepreneurs to protect and grow their wealth
Investec Wealth & Investment (IW&I) has a rich history of achieving the best outcomes for clients dating back to 1827.
We have been proactive in moving with the times by adapting our proposition to complement and facilitate the evolving needs of clients.
IW&I has had an office in Manchester since the early 1990s. Over the past decade, we have seen a boom in the number of entrepreneurs between the ages of 25 to 40 taking advantage of developments in technology to launch a business – many of whom require a professional financial helping hand to help grow their start-up, but also support them when the time comes to step away.
At the coalface of relationships with such clientele are Carl Mitchell and Simone Bilton. The duo, who, aged 35 and 28 respectively, are both firmly in the Millennial demographic, are based in Cheshire and work as part of IW&I’s Manchester Investment Management team.
Carl, an Investment Director, joined IW&I after graduating from University in 2006 and then embarked on an Investment Qualification programme which saw him spend time in both Investec’s Liverpool and Leeds offices, with the latter move being as a Discretionary Desk Investment manager. Carl then moved to Manchester in 2011 where he took on a client facing role. Simone, an Investment Manager, joined in October last year following an almost four-year stint at another wealth manager in a client relationship role
In addition to working directly with private clients and entrepreneurs, they work with a range of intermediaries such as Independent Financial Advisers, solicitors and accountants to offer tailored Investment Management solutions for clients.
For entrepreneur clients, this translates into a comprehensive, bespoke wealth management service (working closely with our Financial Planning colleagues), thus ensuring that the client “journey” is seamless from start to finish.
Simone says: “We look to build longstanding relationships with entrepreneurs with the ultimate aim of being there to support them when they decide to crystallise the value in their business. By working alongside our Financial Planning colleagues, we can look to provide an Investment Management solution that helps to steer clients away from the potential pitfalls that could negatively impact their private finances, post the sale of their business.”
“We often find that clients whose start-up is centred on technology and digital media feel confident in explaining their business concerns and testing out new ideas with us because we’re their target demographic”.
Carl added: “I believe it is imperative to be open and honest with my clients, and a key element of this is ensuring that they fully understand the costs and charges that they will incur as part of our service. As part of this, it is critical that we provide accurate, factual information which enables prospective clients to make the right decision when it comes to choosing a wealth management firm to deal with. It also ensures that you develop a healthy working relationship going forward.”
A common issue for many entrepreneurs is knowing when to sell a stake in their company and coming up with a strategy to do so.
Carl said: “Most entrepreneurs work tirelessly to scale their business but don’t know how to cash in on the fruits of their labour. This is one of the key areas where we can help”.
“Most business owners’ personal wealth is usually tied up in the company. As an owner looks to diversify, a liquidity event becomes a critical step in the wealth management planning process.”
It is our people, coupled with our unique culture and values that are absolutely central to the quality of the services that we deliver to our clients. We continually invest in the development of our staff, the management processes that support us, and seek to strengthen our culture – with the overarching aim of focussing on how to serve clients best.
We would be delighted to talk through your specific investment and financial planning needs and let you experience for yourself what we consider the UK’s leading private client wealth management service.
