My Life with SoulfulMinds Music
We chat with Natasha Lawrence (Singer), Demetrius Lawrence (Drummer/Sound) and Roger Miller (Keys Player/Band MD), from SoulfulMinds Music
Where Is Home?
Natasha: Home is Mobberley, where I live with my husband, our drummer Demetrius, and our daughter Amiyah.
Roger: Home is Cheadle, although I can also be based in Cambridgeshire.
How would you describe yourself?
Natasha: Ambitious, motivated and music-loving.
Demetrius: Fun, football-motivated, loves God and gospel music.
Roger: Family guy, loves God and music.
Where are your favourite Cheshire hotspots?
Natasha: I love to eat, so I have to say Juniper is usually our go-to for either breakfast or a late lunch. Our friend George also owns The Stolen Lamb, and as Greek food is my absolute favourite, I love going there for dinner. Living in Mobberley, Barnshaw Smithy is also a go-to, and then there are the ultimate pies from The Bull’s Head, which is just a short walk from our home.
Roger: The Bubble Room in Alderley Edge, and Chester city centre for walking.
Tell us a fun fact about the band
Demetrius: We are a family band – and we all come from a church and Gospel music background. We originally came from a gospel band, so we also offer a gospel choir as part of our services. We like to sneak a lot of gospel chords into our music, which often has people turning their heads and wondering what they’ve just heard – before absolutely loving it during our sets!
Who or what would you place in Room 101?
Roger: In terms of songs…definitely Sweet Caroline!
What’s the most unforgettable event you’ve played at, and what made it so special?
Natasha: I have to be biased and say our own wedding. We could have had any band we wanted, with a guest count of over 320 people – around 70% of whom were musicians! But we chose to play ourselves because we wanted to make it really personal and special.
One of the funniest unforgettable events we played was for a company based in Knutsford. They had unexpectedly arranged smoke effects on stage, which unfortunately backfired when the wind decided to have other ideas! We were completely engulfed in pink smoke, the whole band disappeared and we were basically choking on stage. It was absolutely awful at the time, but looking back, it’s hilarious and definitely memorable.
Which song is always on a wedding set list, what is the most niche song request you’ve had and what is proving popular in 2026?
Roger: ‘Teardrops’ by Womack & Womack is always our first song of the final set. It gets absolutely everyone back on the dance floor!
Our most niche request has to be ‘Burn’ by Usher.
One song that is currently proving popular – but is also slightly odd given the circumstances – is ‘Where Is My Husband’ by Raye, for obvious reasons!
Have you ever pulled off a surprise performance?
Demetrius: We had a couple who booked us for their wedding in July 2025. For their anniversary this year, they messaged us to say they were coming to watch us perform at Matt & Phreds Jazz Club in Manchester. We decided to surprise them by playing their first-dance song, ‘Tell Him’ by Lauryn Hill. They were completely shocked. The bride was crying, and they ended up getting up in front of the audience and essentially having their first dance all over again. It was such a beautiful moment and exactly why we love what we do – being able to create memories that go beyond the wedding day itself.
