Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard London
Kathryn Otto and partner escaped to the city for a luxury break at Shangri-La’s first hotel in the UK
Location
The hotel is located over floors 34 to 52 of the Shard which gives the hotel the most incredible views of London. Sat right next to London Bridge making everything the capital has to offer easily accessible along with Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral and tower bridge all being within walking distance. The Shangri La Hotel is London’s first elevated luxury hotel standing at 306 metres high created in 2014 and is the first Shangri-La Hotel in the UK.
Facilities
There are 3 food and beverage offerings including one of London’s tallest bars on floor 52, infinity pool, sauna and gym in level 52 along with a selection of function rooms. TĪNG Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and presents a modern British menu incorporating a selection of Shangri-La’s signature Asian dishes, made using locally-sourced ingredients and served within an elegant and contemporary setting of Chinoiserie design.
Afternoon tea lovers are in for a treat with seasonal tea experiences made fresh using locally sourced produce. The London restaurant features views overlooking the meandering River Thames, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, Maritime Greenwich and out towards the historic counties of Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
GŎNG Bar is the perfect place for sunset cocktails and late-night drinks. The creative cocktail menu, A Miscellany of Inventions, offers a selection of drinks inspired by the greatest inventions of all time, from the hot air balloon and helicopter to Penicillin and barcode. Its name derives from “dougong” - a unique structural element of interlocking wooden brackets, used in traditional Chinese architecture and which is also featured in the bar. The space is divided into intimate chambers, with a cocktail bar, champagne bar and a swimming pool.
Rooms
Floor-to-ceiling windows unlock sublime views from all 202 rooms and suites, each highlighted by sophisticated décor with Chinoiserie touches. Body-contouring beds draped in luxury Frette linens make for a relaxing stay, while marble-clad bathrooms feature heated floors and mirror-embedded televisions.
Our Visit
When we visited it was breast cancer awareness month and as we checked in we were asked to hang a wish on their wish tree. As we have both been touched by cancer, we thought this was such a lovely idea - this was to be just the first example of how it’s the little things that the Shangri-La team do that create such a wonderful experience. Our room had the most incredible views overlooking the bridge, the Walkie-talkie and HMS Belfast with our freestanding bath facing out onto the skyline of London. The views were pretty spectacular in the evening with the ever changing colours throughout the night.
We had the pleasure of visiting TING restaurant and were offered a table in the corner which over-looked Wembley and the River Thames which gave us totally different views from what we had enjoyed in our room. I don’t know if this was just a lovely coincidence or if they try and do this for all guests, but it was greatly appreciated. The menu is European with an Asian twist. We decided to start with the Chicken Satay followed by the tastiest Pad Thai I have ever experienced, whilst my partner John enjoyed Malaysian Fried Rice. After dinner we visited GŎNG Bar and enjoyed a glass of Champagne looking out across London. It was the most romantic experience and something neither of us will ever forget.
In the morning we travelled up to the 52nd floor and had a swim in the infinity pool with a lovely seating area where you could enjoy a drink looking out onto the capital waking up. We then chose to enjoy our breakfast in our room before we checked out and made a start on our shopping spree.
Personal Note
Staying at The Shang Ri La is on many people’s bucket list and rightly so, from the moment you enter to the moment you leave you are made to feel special, the service is of the highest standard and is all centred around ensuring every guest leaves with the nicest of memories as we certainly did. I will be craving our Pad Thai meal from TING restaurant for years to come.
