Benjamin Lucas from Artisan Tuition on his approach to one-on-one, tailored teaching
Benjamin’s journey as a tutor is rooted in a family heritage of nearly six generations of teachers and educators. As a teenager, he discovered a love for coaching and mentoring, and throughout his teaching career, has witnessed the profound and lasting effects that successful learning can have on individuals. Benjamin comments, “While I’ve worked in schools, I’ve never sought to confine myself to that setting - I’ve always been drawn to standing alongside the learner, fostering
positive life change.”
Having worked across a variety of educational landscapes, from struggling schools in the North East to elite Swiss institutions like Institut auf dem Rosenberg, Benjamin has built up strong foundations for his tutoring. He comments, “My notable achievements include preparing students for successful entry into top schools, improving exam performance and confidence, and nurturing language fluency or content knowledge where it once seemed impossible. I’ve also had the privilege of mentoring students with various personal obstacles or SEN needs, helping them overcome challenges and achieve their potential through bespoke strategies.”
Benjamin’s approach to teaching is student-centred and highly tailored. He takes the time to craft every lesson and course of study with precision, focusing on each student’s unique needs, goals, and abilities. In regards to his tutoring style he says, “I use cognitive science principles to make learning both accessible and long-lasting, ensuring concepts are understood deeply and retained effectively.
“It is also important that the student is appropriately challenged: having the patience and experience to know how to secure real and deep improvements in learning. It’s clear that activity alone doesn’t always equate to progress. Busyness can often mask the absence of true focus on learning.”
So how does Benjamin measure his student’s progress? Benjamin answers, “Progress is measured through a mix of methods: regular assessments, observing improvements in confidence and independent thinking, and tracking how well students apply learned skills.
“Much of the effective assessment in my job is ‘on the go’ and adapting with students’ progress as it happens. At the right time and with sufficient foundations built up, we put acquired knowledge under pressure in different contexts to ensure mastery and confident skill. I also maintain open communication with parents to discuss progress and adjust strategies as needed.”
When it comes to test preparation, Benjamin combines subject mastery with study skills. He comments, “I teach students to revise both hard and smart, applying memory techniques and exam strategies to improve retention and performance. Practice under exam conditions is key, ensuring they feel confident and prepared on the day. However, preparation requires skills and knowledge that are deep, confident, and correctly applied. To that end, my first focus is always on making sure that pupils are helped to become excellent learners with advanced knowledge in each area to be tested.”
