Top 5 Reasons To Protect Your Pet When Travelling

For many of us our pets are part of the family, so it’s time to keep them safer on the road

WORDS: Luisa Rollins-Svensson from Tavo Pets

We’re a nation of pet lovers. Over half of us (51%)
own a pet, 28% of UK adults have a dog and 24% a cat. That’s over 10 million dogs alone according to pet charity the PDSA, many of which we take out in the car on a regular basis. But while we don’t think twice about securing our children in
the safest way possible, we don’t always give the same consideration to our furry friends.

So, why protect your pet when travelling?

Protect your pet from injury

Research by Tavo found that a staggering 59% of motorists have travelled with their dog in the most dangerous way possible, unsecured or on their lap. Put simply, this puts a pet’s life in danger.

Dr. Scott Miller explains: “As a practising vet surgeon, I witness firsthand the devastating impact of car crash injuries on pets. From whiplash to dislodged teeth and eyes to fractured bones, even in tragic circumstances, death. We don’t put our babies on the back seat unrestrained; then why are we doing it to our fur babies?”

Dr. Scott Miller

You’re putting everyone in the car at risk

Did you know, at 30mph, an unrestrained pet could be thrown forward with a force of 30 to 60 times their own body weight? You’re not alone if you weren’t aware. To keep you, your passengers, and your much-loved dog or cat safe when on the road, it’s vital that pets are safely restrained. This means securely fixing a carrier into the vehicle so it can’t roll in the event of a collision. For further peace of mind, ensure the pet car seat has been crash test certified.

Keep anxious pets calm

Canine behaviourist and trainer, Adem Fehmi brings into sharp focus dog anxiety and the risk it brings inside a car: “The sounds, sights, scents and motion of a car can feel extremely alien to a dog if not introduced positively, which may elevate a dog’s stress levels. This doesn’t just affect them; if a dog is stressed, it can become a distraction for drivers too. Tavo research reveals 40% of drivers admit to being distracted by their dogs while driving. Considering that driver distraction is a leading cause of accidents, it is clear to me that addressing this issue isn’t just beneficial; it’s essential.”

Prioritise pet comfort

With more of us choosing dog-friendly staycations for our holidays, our pets are in the car with us for longer. By selecting the right pet carrier, you’ll not only be keeping them safe, but comfortable too. Choose a carrier that’s spacious, with premium and washable linings and one that lets plenty of light in, so your pet feels comfortable. Flexible mesh ventilation panels are great for airflow and giving your pet a view of the world around them.

It’s never been easier!

Tavo has a range of premium pet car seats to transform travel for dogs and cats.  Importantly, each one is impact-tested to United Nations ECE child restraint standards. This means you travel with confidence that your much-loved pets – and other passengers in the car – are protected. The range expertly combines premium style and comfort with industry-leading safety for happy pets and owners.
