Weekend Away - The Peninsula New York
Set in a historic 23-storey Beaux-Arts style building, The Peninsula New York played host to Daniel Khan
Location
Among one of the oldest skyscraper hotels in the city, The Peninsula New York was opened as Gotham Hotel 1905 until it closed due to bankruptcy in 1908. The hotel is ideally located on Fifth Avenue and 55th Street, which offers easy access to high-end stores for shoppers and art lovers. The Louis Vuitton store - with the artistic facade resembling a stack of the brand's iconic luggage trunk - is across the street, and there is a Rolex boutique literally next door. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is also only minutes from the hotel.
Rooms and Suites
The hotel’s public spaces including The Lobby, Reception and The Palm Court have recently been given a refresh from New York City-based design firm Bill Rooney Studio.
The 219 rooms and suites have also been renovated to include new contemporary comforts and high-tech conveniences. These include a digital bedside panel that works as a 24-hour digital concierge, in which you can make calls and order in-room dining. There is also a larger bedside tablet in which you can control the lighting and temperature of the room, the television and book into the hotel’s restaurants and spa, or even shop. The tablet also has a ‘Concierge Recommends’ section that offers up some great places to visit nearby. The high-tech does not stop there; each bedside drawer also contains a wireless charger and power bank.
Food & Drink
The Gotham Lounge is a chic, intimate bar and lounge area. At the weekend a live pianist adds to the ambiance whilst guests savour their cocktails.
Pen Top is the hotel’s stunning rooftop garden that hosts a captivating menu of classic cocktails, light bites and gorgeous skyline views.
The Bar at Clement, is a stylish low- lit modern lounge overlooking Fifth Avenue that offers a very decadent speciality - a Martini & Caviar pairing which is two Belvedere 10 Martinis alongside 30g of exquisite Petrossian Baika Caviar.
Clement is the hotel’s signature restaurant that serves seasonal American fare for breakfast and lunch. On a Saturday things get lively at the Fifth Avenue Live Music Brunch that comes with a range of exceptional cocktails or champagne and on Sundays, things are chilled right down with the new Sunday Brunch Buffet with live piano music.
Spa and Wellness
With striking floor-to-ceiling teak columns set against a cool black tile floor, the hotel’s indoor pool needs to be seen to be believed Top Tip: we arrived an hour before closing, and there was not a soul in sight, adding to the serene environment.
The hotel’s Fitness Centre offers stunning skyline views of Manhattan. Partnering with Technogym, the Fitness Centre offers all the latest fitness equipment, fresh fruit, towels and water. You can even pick up the latest copy of Vanity Fair.
The hotel’s spa facilities also include separate saunas, aromatherapy steam rooms, ice fountains, and relaxation lounges for men and women, a tea lounge and a private Spa Suite with stunning city views.
Our Experience
The service at The Peninsula New York was a real standout – genuine, yet not overbearing. For those looking for something a little extra special, The Peninsula Academy offers to book guests tours and
city experiences, taking any planning stress away so
you can focus on enjoying your break.
As soon as we arrived at the hotel, everything was taken care of. Our luggage was taken, we were swiftly checked-in and breakfast was quickly booked for the morning.
The room was surprisingly large considering the zip code and the bed was incredibly comfortable, with crisp white sheets. The high-tech nature of the room made for a very easy, relaxing stay. Staying in Midtown Manhattan, you expect some noise, but the double-glazed windows more than kept the city noise at bay. The deluxe marble bathroom was roomy and had a walk-in shower and large bathtub. The soap was created by local fragrance creator Mackenzie Reilly - which was a lovely touch.
Clement at breakfast hosted a real mix of business travellers with tourist groups exploring the city. The service was personable and attentive. For the full NYC experience, I’d recommend the tasty Fifth Avenue Breakfast.
With a welcoming chandelier and twin staircases in the lobby, large high-tech guest rooms, a tranquil swimming pool and some of the best service in the city, The Peninsula NYC makes for an exceptional experience.
