Weekend by the Sea

With the sun beating down on the north west, Kathryn Otto and partner headed to Southport to enjoy a summer seaside break

Southport has reopened with a warm and welcoming smile. With so many open spaces and outdoor activities to enjoy, it’s the perfect place to spend the summer months doing the things you’ve missed, whether that’s thrill seeking, eating out or just relaxing. I jumped into the car and made the short drive from Cheshire to experience a perfect UK trip in this beautiful Victorian coastal town.

Stay

We chose to stay at the unique Vincent Hotel, a contemporary boutique hotel situated in the heart of Southport. Opening its doors in 2008, the hotel was designed by award-winning architects Falconer Chester Hall. With six floors of tranquillity, the hotel has 59 guest rooms all designed with style and relaxation in mind. The luxury hotel also boasts an in-house hair and beauty salon (House of Evelyn) and several food and drinks offerings.

Eat

We enjoyed a lovely lunch at Remedy opposite The Atkinson which overlooked the lovely row of shops on lord street, where we were looked after by Ben and enjoyed a club sandwich and a glass of wine. The summer sun even made an appearance which made our lunch even more enjoyable.

For our evening meal we decided to visit Kalash Divine Indian, which offered authentic indian cuisine, the team could not do enough for us, the food was delicious and the way we were looked after was incredible, we just wish there was a Kalash restaurant in Cheshire! We will certainly be returning.

What to do

Southport is a beautiful quintessentially English seaside town with so much to offer. Next to our hotel was The Atkinson which is Southport’s home for music, theatre, art, literature and history. They offer an exciting and varied destination for families, cultural tourists and arts enthusiasts alike, with a full day and night time offer. Significant investment has been made in refurbishing the stunning 19th century buildings to create a welcoming and accessible multi art-form venue with a strong contemporary feel. On our visit we looked at the new Red Rum exhibition (available until October) – which traces the Southport legend’s life through a racing career which took him over 300 miles and 1800 obstacles to his becoming an iconic sports celebrity in retirement.

There are so many beautiful beaches and areas surrounding Southport that we wanted to explore so we chose to do this by bike. We visited the Southport Eco Centre and hired two bikes to cycle on the esplanade to Ainsdale Beach around 3.5 miles away, then we decided to come back and visit the Pier

Southport Pier

This was like going back in time, Grade ll listed, opened in 1860 and is the longest pier and oldest iron pier in Britain. And, if there isn’t enough history in the pier itself, in the pier pavilion you can view a small exhibition on Southport’s history as well as playing traditional penny slot machines including pre decimal one-armed bandits, offering the perfect summer nostalgia for the whole family.
