Extraordinary new artwork installation inspired by Tatton Park’s historic mansion ball
International artist Susie MacMurray has created an extraordinary, large scale artwork installation which will be on display in the Mansion at Tatton Park from 28th June - 6th October 2019.
Working with a team of volunteers from East Cheshire Hospice she has created a new site-specific work, ‘Gathering’, which will be suspended from the rotunda in the Staircase Hall in Tatton’s impressive 18th Century Mansion house.
Made up of thousands of individual elements, ‘Gathering’ has been inspired by the work of the hospice as well as this years ‘Tatton Ball’ exhibition, which explores the spectacle and theatre of a grand ball held at Tatton in 1897 to celebrate William Egerton’s Earldom.
The red velvet which makes up the elements of ‘Gathering’ is the same crimson in the silk velvet ball dress worn by Earl Egerton’s wife, Alice. A replica of this stunning gown, originally made by House of Worth in Paris, is also on display as well as fascinating insights into the music, etiquette, food and colour of high society entertaining.
‘Gathering’ is supported by Arts Council England and The Arts Society and will hopefully help raise funds for the hospice with individual elements and prints sold to supporters and visitors during and after the exhibition ends.
Carole Hyde, Business Development Manager at Tatton Park said, “We are delighted to be able to support the hospice by having an artist of Susie MacMurray’s calibre creating this site-specific artwork for us. We hope that visitors will take the opportunity to experience this unique installation, the Tatton Ball exhibition and all that Tatton Park has to offer this summer.”
Gathering will be on display in the Mansion at Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire from 28 June - 6 October 2019. The Mansion is open between 1-5pm (last entry 4pm), Wednesday to Sunday.
