City of Angels

With days spent lounging by the rooftop pool and nights remembered with cocktails and skyline views, Steven Hough checked into the Ritz-Carlton, styled as a contemporary hotel infused with the allure of classic Hollywood

In the near 45 minute ride from the airport, my driver indulged the very British topics of conversation in traffic and weather and seemed amused by my bewilderment at the size and make-up of the American highway, which, at six lanes wide made me realise why James Corden requires a helping hand getting to work.

The Location

The hotel itself is a towering presence nestled in an excellent location which this a big draw for those looking to visit. Sat opposite LA Live and next to the Staples Centre, with the LA Convention Centre and Dodger Stadium (to name but two) within short walking distance, this is the hotel for all occasions.

Those looking for entertainment on the doorstep are truly spoilt, with the LA Lakers and LA Kings offering world class basketball and hockey respectively, whilst a short drive allows baseball lovers to take in Dodgers stadium. Fear not, music lovers, you have the Grammy museum just around the corner, with the walk of fame guiding you from the hotel doors. Add to this the Microsoft Theatre and the Ritz-Carlton becomes the base of entertainment in the city.

For all those business travellers, the convenient positioning, only a stones throw from the multitude of conferences and events throughout the year at the LA Convention Centre is without doubt a real draw.

The Rooms

For my first time visit to the Ritz-Carlton I was staying in a King Deluxe Room Suite on the 23rd Floor. And the room itself was magnificent. Entering the room, I was greeted with a wood panelled corridor and full-length mirror with stylish gold and cream carpeting – plenty of extra room for those who want a little extra space getting ready before heading out.

The hotels guestrooms had recently undergone refurbishment and the changes definitely ring true to its promise of contemporary urban luxury. Rounding the corner into the main bedroom, the contemporary style is evident with a grey colour scheme throughout. The room itself boasted a 180 degree view of LA, which at 23 floors high provided an amazing backdrop for my stay.

The feather bed and duvet with accompanying high thread cotton sheets delivered a comfortable night sleep, whilst the 42 inch flat screen, smart TV ensured a wealth of entertainment at the click of a button for any down time in the room. As ever, a fully stocked and varied mini-bar was nestled in the corner.

There is ample space with bedside tables, dresser and wardrobe allowing for a comfortable stay no matter how long you are in town for. The bathroom was exquisite, with contrasting grey tiles throughout. A deep bath sat within a wet room and double sinks, alongside a variety of Asprey toiletries to provide an opulent scent to start every day.

I also received a handwritten note to welcome me on my visit; a wonderful touch adding an extra degree of comfort to my stay.  It is with these small details and touches dotted throughout that you gain the appreciation of this fully 5 star experience.

Recently refurbished, it is clear that the rooms have been made with their customers firmly in mind and I could quite honestly have happily spent my time there lounging around with the satellite TV and room service without a care in the world.

The Service

A huge plus point for anyone visiting is the staff. The reception team in the lobby welcome you with open arms and offer a no hassle check-in. Following a flight and cab ride, this makes for the perfect start to any vacation and alongside the recently refurbished lobby, very much gleaning in opulence, makes a huge difference in mood and sets up a memorable stay.

For those who want to explore the immediate locality, the offer of a complimentary chauffer-driven Rolls Royce to showcase the sights within a 3 mile radius allows guests to extend the luxury of the Ritz into their journey through downtown LA.

The Club Lounge offers continual support no matter what time you enter. As soon as you open the door, you are greeted by a member of staff with a warm smile and courteous hello. Staff are on hand to cater to your every need, be it getting food or drinks and are happy to strike up conversation. On my final night, with my flight to Las Vegas early morning, one staff member, Tory, was even kind enough to arrange for me to have breakfast and coffee waiting at the lobby for me ensure I didn’t miss out – thanks for making my morning Tory.

The little note from the cleaners as well as the hotel welcoming me on my stay was further testament to the impeccable service you can expect from the Ritz-Carlton.

Club Lounge

Located on our 23rd floor, The Ritz-Carlton Club Level combines intimacy, comfort, exclusivity and personalised attention to redefine the traditional luxury hotel experience. Complementing these elevated accommodations is the Club Lounge, a dedicated space for guests to work, meet or unwind. Overlooking the sprawling LA landscape, the lounge offers a dedicated concierge and complimentary food and beverage offerings throughout the day.

The drinks selection was vast, with a selection of fine wines, Champagne and beers alongside a host of soft drinks. Unwinding at the windows overlooking LA, this offered a perfect setting to relax with a glass of Pinot Noir and delve into a book, glancing up frequently to take in the spectacular views. The telescope positioned on the window staring directly at the world-famous Hollywood sign was a great touch.

Food is on display in the club lounge into the evening, with a full continental breakfast on offer. Throughout the day there an additional four different meal settings, offering sandwiches, salads and hot dishes – a marinated salmon and couscous a particular delight.

Rooftop Pool

A few floors above the club lounge sits the gym and outdoor pool area. The gym has everything you need for a robust workout, with plenty of machines and space. With luxurious outdoor seating, there is a perfect place to spend an afternoon soaking up the beautiful LA weather and the pool alongside provides an escape to cool down and exercise. This to me was a particular highlight, the glass windows surrounding the area giving you an additional sightline across the city.

In addition, the Ritz-Carlton also has a glamorous spa adorning the second floor with a range of treatments within which to unwind, whilst on the 24th Floor, its Wolfgang Puck restaurant offers another tempting feature to draw in the glitterati of Hollywood.

Summary

The Ritz Carlton offers the ultimate LA experience for anyone that graces it doors. Everything about this place is impeccable, from the friendly and attentive staff to the world class amenities and unbeatable location. Citing itself as a contemporary hotel infused with the allure of classic Hollywood, it certainly delivers on this promise but goes further, and offers more. Whilst you may very well enter as a guest, after your stay here you will undoubtedly leave feeling part of the Ritz-Carlton family. For those looking for that next trip away or those planning on visiting LA, I would strongly recommend you visit this little oasis in downtown LA.
