Kat Hannon enjoyed a magical family coastal break at Bude Coastal Resort

As a mum with two daughters, our trip to Bude Coastal Resort was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, it felt like we’d stepped into a little piece of luxury tucked away on the Cornish coast. The lodge we stayed in was absolutely stunning – modern, spacious, and beautifully styled. But what really made it special were the little touches. The heated floors? A total treat, especially on those chilly mornings. The cosy,  luxurious interiors, complete with everything we could possibly need for a relaxing family escape, made us feel right at home.

Mornings began slowly with a hot brew in the hot tub, the steam rising around us as the sun crept up. It was peaceful and perfect. Afterward, the girls loved splashing about in the heated indoor pool, and I must admit, I was in there with them more often than I expected! The pool area was spotless, well maintained and incredibly relaxing. It was clear that we were being well looked after, but it never felt too much, just the right amount of comfort and care.

One of our favourite moments each day was the view of the sweet little lake outside our lodge. The ducks would waddle around as we unwound in the evening, watching the light fade over the water. It was quiet, calming, and surprisingly entertaining for the girls, sometimes, a simple thing like watching ducks can provide hours of amusement!

While Bude itself is beautiful, it was the resort that truly made our stay. It gave us the space and time to slow down, laugh together, and just enjoy each other’s company. We didn’t want to leave, and if we ever find ourselves in Cornwall again, this place will definitely be at the top of our list.

Bude as a whole is packed with charm and adventure, making it perfect for families like ours. For a unique and safe swimming experience, we started our trip with a dip in the iconic Bude Sea Pool, a semi-natural tidal pool right off Summerleaze Beach. It’s perfect for a scenic swim without the worry of the sea’s currents. After that, we spent some time on Summerleaze Beach, with its soft golden sands, and Crooklets Beach, where the surf was ideal for the girls to splash around in. It was the kind of place where both sandcastle builders and wave riders could enjoy themselves equally.

If you enjoy walking, the South West Coast Path offers dramatic views, with plenty of spots for taking photos. One of the highlights was Compass Point, where we got to enjoy a stunning clifftop view of the coastline. For a gentler pace, we recommend the Bude Canal, where you can walk, paddleboard, or even hire a rowing boat. The whole area is peaceful and perfect for spotting local wildlife - another big hit with the girls.

For families with younger kids, the Splash Leisure Pool is definitely worth a visit. It has a wave machine and flume that the girls absolutely loved. We also spent a bit of time exploring Bude Castle & Heritage Centre, where we learnt about the town’s history and admired some local art. If you’re in Bude on the right day, the Bude Farmers & Craft Market is a lovely spot to pick up some local treats and handmade gifts.

Bude is also known for its surf scene, you can sign up for beginner-friendly surf lessons, which are not only fun but also perfect for building sea leg confidence in the water! After a busy day of adventures, treat yourself to a meal at one of Bude’s clifftop cafés. There’s nothing quite like fresh seafood while the sea breeze is in your hair, and the sunset at Widemouth Bay was simply unforgettable.

There are so many hidden gems in Bude that you won’t want to miss including the Storm Tower at Compass Point, a fascinating navigation tower that’s been moved twice due to cliff erosion - talk about a moving monument! And if you’re into geocaching, Bude is the geocaching capital of Cornwall, with hidden caches scattered across the cliffs, canals and countryside.

Just outside town, the Maer Lake Nature Reserve is a peaceful escape for birdwatchers. You can spend a relaxing morning there, watching herons and swans and enjoying the tranquillity. It’s a perfect place to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in nature, all while being just a short stroll from the beach.

In all, Bude will give you the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and family bonding. It was the kind of holiday where we made memories that will last a lifetime and we’ll definitely be back!
