Fashion Forward - Summer holidays

Martine Alexander, Celebrity Stylist and Wardrobe Concierge, offers her expert fashion adviceโ€ฆ

Summer holidays are upon us and whether youโ€™re heading away on a girlsโ€™ trip or a family va-cay, weโ€™re all guilty of over packing and taking far too much with us! This month Iโ€™m going to give you my top tips on how to pack efficiently

One of my most popular wardrobe concierge services is shopping for my clientโ€™s upcoming holidays, packing their suitcases and giving them enough outfits that cater for every occasion whilst theyโ€™re in sunnier climes. Itโ€™s a great solution for my clients, because theyโ€™re busy packing for the rest of the family, plus they donโ€™t want to think about what to take themselves. If this sounds like you, then read onโ€ฆ

Hereโ€™s my top ten tips on how to pack light but also have enough options for every day youโ€™re away:

  • Know what youโ€™re going to be doing each day/night. Is there a dress code for certain places or activities? Do your research and make sure youโ€™re not caught short on the day

  • For every night youโ€™re away, pack a separate outfit, plus a couple (and I mean, a couple, not ten!) of backups, just in case

  • Plan your in-flight outfit first and keep to one side

  • Try on each outfit and photograph it for reference whilst youโ€™re away

  • Mix and match your tops and bottoms to create more room in your suitcase and where possible, have a colour palette for your outfits. It makes interchanging and co-ordinating a lot easier

  • Keep print to a minimum if youโ€™re short on space. Block colours are a lot easier to style up or down

  • Make sure you have a couple of items with longer sleeves in case the temperature drops at night

  • Take minimal pairs of shoes โ€“ a daytime sandal like a flip flop, an evening flat sandal (tan is always the best colour as it can be classed as nude and will go with every outfit you have), an evening heel or wedge plus a trainers (to fly in) will cover all bases

  • Invest in travel bags and separate your lingerie, swimwear and accessories into them. They make life a lot easier when packing and also when you arrive at your destination

  • When it comes to packing your clothes, lay sections of clothes on top of one another and then roll them. It minimises creasing and saves on room

What Iโ€™ve Been Up Toโ€ฆ

This month Iโ€™ve been taking my own advice - shopping and sourcing wardrobe options for clients that are going on holiday, styling a celebrity client for an upcoming presenting project and attending press events as Iโ€™m one of the judges for the โ€˜This is Manchesterโ€™ Awards.
