How My 8-Year-Old Became My Ultimate Workout Buddy
As a fitness professional and a parent, I’ve learnt that some of the best workouts don’t happen in the gym; they happen in the garden, on the trampoline or mid-game of Ghost Tag (our very own high-speed, giggle-fuelled invention).
My 8-year-old daughter is my unintentional sidekick in fitness, always ready to race, jump, climb or chase. And honestly, she’s keeping me on my toes more than any spin class ever could. Even as a toddler, we found fitness activities to be great fun and this has continued ever since.
Our Routine?
A Chaos-Fueled Cardio Dream
Our weekly mix includes padel matches, swimming, cycling adventures, dance-offs, basketball shootouts and monkey bar missions. We don’t “work out” in the traditional sense; we move, we play, we compete and we laugh… a lot.
Don’t underestimate the calorie-busting power of play:
30 mins of biking: 200–300 calories
Trampolining: 150–200 calories
Swimming: 250–400 calories
Tag (yes, tag!): Up to 300 calories
We even throw in “mini workouts” with child-friendly versions of burpees, box jumps and press-ups. She gets to “train like Mum” and I get to sneak in some strength work without missing a beat.
The Real Wins Go Beyond Calories
Being active together builds healthy habits, boosting confidence, improving moods and keeping screens to a minimum.
My Advice to Parents?
Don’t aim for perfection; aim for participation. Get involved. Get silly. Get sweaty.
Encouraging children to be active from an early age helps them build healthy habits, enjoy the fun and social benefits of fitness and sports. This also helps to develop routines that support their physical and mental well-being for life.
Whether it’s a quick run around in the garden or synchronised star jumps in the living room, the important thing is to move with your children.
