Perched high above Turkey’s dramatic Datça Peninsula, Kate Kinsella experiences D Maris Bay, a luxury clifftop resort where natural beauty takes centre stage

It is said that the first thirty minutes of a guest’s arrival sets the tone for their entire stay. At D Maris Bay, they do not simply set the tone; they elevate it to a level that feels cinematic. After navigating the vortex of airports and planes, we arrive to warm, smiling faces before we have even stepped out of the car. It feels like arriving at the home of friends we have known for years, the kind of genuine welcome that instantly softens the edges of travel fatigue.
As we walk through the doors, a magnificent sweep of sky appears through the floor to ceiling windows leading onto the terrace. We are guided outside and sink into chic outdoor sofas, swiftly presented with refreshing scented towels and a crisp glass of bubbles. The eagerness to see the view in its entirety takes over almost immediately. Even under overcast skies, the resort is breathtaking, a reminder that true beauty does not rely on sunshine.
A light rain begins to fall, though we remain untouched. Behind us, a member of the team quietly holds an umbrella, ensuring nothing interrupts the moment. It is a level of proactivity that is rare and captures the excellence of D Maris Bay perfectly. Throughout our stay, the service proves not just attentive but intuitive, anticipating needs before they are spoken.
Once the bubbles are finished, we are asked if we are ready to head to our room. Eager to settle in, my lovely butleress leads the way upstairs. Immediate gratitude is shown to the housekeeping team for preparing the room to perfection, and the interior designer clearly understands what every Carrie Bradshaw type dreams of. Storage, gorgeous lighting and a vanity space with all the essentials a woman could need. It feels like a space designed by someone who truly understands how people live, not just how a hotel room should look.
Stepping out onto the spacious balcony becomes the first of many pinch me moments. From the balcony, the raw beauty of the Datça Peninsula in southwest Turkey unfolds in every direction. Quiet settles in, which is rare for me, as the beauty of D Maris Bay unfolds. The fear of missing even a second of the view keeps me rooted in place. It is the kind of scene that draws out the deepest of breaths and the realisation that this place is truly unique.
Eventually, the promise of dinner pulls me back inside. A reservation at Zuma awaits, and the famous black cod and signature cocktails are calling. On the way out, a door not yet opened reveals the most fabulous bathtub overlooking the bay. A dreamy bathtime is immediately added to the itinerary.
Zuma, as expected, does not disappoint. Watching the talented chefs prepare intricate Japanese dishes in their open kitchen while sipping on a cocktail feels like having front row seats to a culinary performance. Fed and watered in the most fabulous way possible, sleep comes easily, wrapped in luxurious bedding and pillows that feel like clouds.
Morning brings sunshine and reassurance. The beloved view is now glowing even brighter. Breakfast at D Maris Bay deserves its own moment. A table on the terrace sets the scene for what might be the most impressive breakfast offering I have ever seen. An iced matcha and eggs Benedict are ordered, followed by freshly made juices, warm pastries and an array of international dishes. It would be rude not to indulge.
From the terrace, the iconic Dior pool comes into view, dressed in light blue and white striped parasols. Elegant Dior cabanas frame the water, each one feeling like a chapter from the designer’s classic archives. Floating on the surface are Dior floating daybeds, oversized and beautifully designed, inviting guests to drift in complete serenity. The entire scene feels more like a fantasy fashion editorial than a hotel pool.
A level above the pool sits the Dior boutique, a space showcasing the newest iconic pieces, from resort wear to accessories made for a fashion lover’s sunlit escape.
Exploring the resort under the beaming sunshine becomes its own adventure. At the entrance, we hop onto a Dior buggy, which makes the moment feel even more fabulous. Tropical flowers, butterflies and even tortoises greet us as we glide along, creating the feeling of travelling through a botanical dream.
The tennis courts and padel box come into view next. Tennis star Jamie Murray leads the summer tennis programmes in collaboration with Lux Tennis, and the renowned coach Gustavo Pratto is set to host padel events in July. Even newcomers to the sport can sense the excitement.
A picture-perfect stretch of beachfront soon appears. An adorable ice cream parlour with pastel décor and delicious looking sweet treats catches the eye. Just opposite, a row of charming boutiques sit to the side
of the beachfront, showcasing stylish summer pieces
that make it difficult to keep your card in your purse.
A decked pathway leads to an impressive line-up of restaurants. Nusr Et, D Maris Kitchen, La Guérite and Aurora Capri, all designed to perfection and ready to show why they are stars of the gastronomy scene. They all live up to their names. The culinary talent here is like no other.
Further along, immaculate boats sit quietly alongside an array of water toys. The Aegean waters prove irresistible, and a water bike ride becomes the perfect way to please the inner child. A calming canoe ride follows, building up to the appetite that comes next. Lunch at D Maris Kitchen is a steady flow of delicious meze dishes that showcase the creativity and skill of the resident head chef and his team. Every plate arrives bursting with colour and flavour.
Many hotels claim to offer something for everyone, but few deliver the way D Maris Bay does. Every detail is thoughtfully curated to help guests escape the stressors of daily life. Mytha Spa is the embodiment of this. Serene, soothing scents fill the air, providing instant tranquillity. Zuma’s Silence Beach offers a peaceful continuation of that calm, while Hidden Beach provides a sandy sanctuary for those seeking solitude. It is rare to find a resort that caters so beautifully to both social and private moments.
For those who like to stay active, the gym has everything needed, and the scenic jogging route is ready-made for endorphin chasers. Yoga lovers adore Talia, the ever-charming instructor who tailors each session to individual needs, guiding guests through a practice immersed in nature. It is the kind of session that leaves the body grateful and the mind quiet.
When the mood calls for something livelier, the hotel’s Greek restaurant, Manos, is essential. Arrive hungry. The seafood and Greek meze dishes are sensational, served by the best, all while energetic musicians encourage diners to dance the night away. Not familiar with Greek dancing? The Manos team will teach you. Complete with making wishes and breaking plates, it is a joyful release and a night that stays with you.
Throughout the stay, one thing remains consistent. The positivity of the D Maris Bay team. They have perfected the art of genuine connection. Never forced, always heartfelt. Their knowledge of the resort is impressive and their passion is infectious.
Meeting the general manager, Vito, ties everything together. His professional history is outstanding, but more importantly, he radiates a love for hospitality and people that clearly inspires his entire team. The service ethos at D Maris Bay starts with him and flows through every member of staff.
It is easy to write endlessly about how mesmerising D Maris Bay and its team of experts are, but like all paradises, it is something that must be experienced to be truly understood. Eventually, it is time to leave. We are waved off with a Turkish ritual that I will keep a secret, but it ends our stay with nothing but gratitude for what will remain a cherished memory.
