Summer Recharge
Clare Stobart discovered a head-to-toe health reset at Palazzo Fiuggi, where Italian grandeur meets advanced medicine, exceptional food and an extraordinary spa
As a self-confessed fitness and wellness fanatic, I thought I knew what to expect from a health retreat. I love treatments, exercise, nutrition and all the little rituals that promise to help us feel better. Palazzo Fiuggi, however, was on another level.
Set above the historic town of Fiuggi in the Lazio hills, around an hour from Rome, the magnificent Art Nouveau palazzo was built in 1913 with the ambition of becoming the grandest hotel in Europe. It was even said to be the first hotel on the continent with its own swimming pool.
The experience began as our car swept up the long driveway towards the magnificent Art Nouveau palazzo. Inside, marble floors, soaring ceilings and unusually wide corridors created an extraordinary sense of space. Although the hotel was reportedly full, I often wandered through the building and spa without seeing another guest.
My bedroom had luxurious linens, marble finishes and sweeping views across Fiuggi, but this was not a holiday for heels and cocktail dresses. I practically lived in sportswear, swimwear and a dressing gown and I loved every minute of it.
From the moment I arrived, I was given a detailed personal itinerary covering every hour of my stay. It was not simply a spa timetable, but a medically designed programme that balanced diagnostic testing, exercise, treatments, nutrition and recovery.
A typical day began with breakfast before heading out on a guided hike through the Fiuggi hills, followed by biomechanical assessments, body-composition analysis and consultations with the medical team. Afternoons were filled with treatments, with healthy meals, snacks and plenty of hydration carefully scheduled in between. Every appointment had a purpose and every hour felt intentionally planned. For someone like me, who adores being busy and making the most of every wellness opportunity, it was heaven.
The principal programmes are generally structured around stays of seven, ten or fourteen nights and staff told me that seven nights remains the most popular choice. Each has a distinct focus, from longevity and rejuvenation to deep detoxification and optimal weight management, with the medical assessments, food and treatments adjusted accordingly.
My first experience was lunch in the magnificent dining room. Palazzo Fiuggi follows a “Food as Medicine” philosophy, with menus created by three-Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck in collaboration with the retreat’s medical and scientific team.
My personalised Longevity and Rejuvenation menu provided approximately 1,835 calories and 86 grams of protein each day. Everything was fresh, clean and beautifully presented. The hotel officially operates without alcohol or coffee, although a full menu of herbal infusions was available.
The longevity menu was balanced and surprisingly substantial. Other programmes take a different approach: staff explained that the Deep Detox plan includes two liquid-only days during a seven-night stay, alongside treatments specifically selected to support the programme’s detoxification focus. This was not a generic healthy menu served to everyone; the food was treated as an integral part of the prescription.
The little details made it special. A fresh ginger shot was waiting at my place at every meal, while breakfast included a daily Palazzo Fiuggi wellness supplement. Nothing was left to chance; not simply what I ate, but when I ate it.
My body certainly noticed the change. Without my usual caffeine and sugar, I developed a headache that felt similar to one of my migraines. I was reassured that a sudden change in diet and caffeine consumption can be uncomfortable. As the days passed, however, I began to feel clearer, lighter and calmer.
I became fascinated by the results on my Oura Ring. Each morning, I checked the data and watched my resting heart rate fall day by day. It felt like visible proof that my body was responding to the combination of structured nutrition, wellness treatments, sleep and deep relaxation.
My programme began with a medical consultation, an electrocardiogram, bioelectrical impedance analysis and a three-dimensional Styku body scan. I also received an immune-supporting intravenous vitamin infusion, administered under medical supervision. The wider medical offering includes cardiovascular and metabolic assessments, health screening and diagnostic imaging.
One of the most impressive parts of my stay was my biomechanical evaluation in the HPM Movement Lab. After a Gait & Stance analysis and performance evaluation, they identified a blockage in my back, which was then treated by an exceptionally knowledgeable physiotherapist and osteopath. Watching them work together was incredible. They were not simply treating the area that hurt; they were examining how my whole body moved and addressing the underlying imbalance.
The expertise of the individual practitioners is central to the experience.
Across four days, I experienced an extraordinary variety of therapies. There was the signature Palazzo Fiuggi Hammam ritual, bodywork designed to release stress and muscular tension and thalassotherapy using mineral-rich seawater, which left my skin feeling silky and soft.
I also experienced a Kobido lifting facial that left my skin looking noticeably firmer, a three-step hydrotherapy ritual, guided mindfulness and sound healing, alongside hiking and movement sessions. Rather than feeling indulgent for indulgence’s sake, every treatment was chosen to complement the medical programme and its overall longevity goals.
Water is at the heart of Palazzo Fiuggi. Spring water drawn from the surrounding mountains has been associated with the town for centuries and can be drunk directly from the Palazzo’s fountain.
Every day, I also completed ten rounds of the Kneipp circuit, walking through warm water at approximately 33°C before braving water of around 8°C. The contrast was intense but addictive. Afterwards, I felt completely awake and revitalised.
I became equally devoted to the colder plunge pool, lowering myself into the water up to my neck and trying to remain there for a little longer each day. It was never comfortable, but stepping out produced an extraordinary rush of energy.
Another unforgettable experience was the Mindfulness Ritual in the sauna. A therapist entered carrying a large, scented ball of ice, which was crushed over the hot stones and used sweeping movements to circulate the fragrant steam around us. The ceremony lasted for three songs, with a different scent introduced during each one. This was followed by a sound bath on loungers beside the pool. I cannot remember the last time I felt so deeply relaxed.
Alongside the treatments were yoga, pranayama breathing, gym sessions and guided movement.
The international guests I met had come for everything from medical treatments to weight loss and a complete lifestyle reset.
Palazzo Fiuggi attracts a discreet celebrity clientele. Oprah Winfrey visited with Gayle King and friends, while past guests have included Jeremy Clarkson, Sophia Loren and Pablo Picasso. I was also told Mel Gibson had stayed the week before my visit.
Seven-night programmes start from approximately €8,018 per person, although prices vary significantly according to the medical plan and room category.
By my fourth and final day, I felt like a new woman. My face was glowing, my skin felt smooth, my mind was clear and my body felt far less heavy and inflamed. I felt stress-free, rejuvenated and genuinely, ten years younger.
Palazzo Fiuggi combined the glamour of an exceptional Italian hotel with the structure of a health clinic and the indulgence of one of the most beautiful spas I have visited. Across four days, I completed more than 30 scheduled appointments, treatments, meals, assessments and wellness experiences, yet somehow never felt rushed or clinical.
I left with a clearer understanding of my body and a powerful reminder of how different we can feel when we give our health our full attention.
