INSIDE Sugar Beach
We talk to James Wyndham, Managing Director of Sugar Beach, a world-class resort set in 30 acres of idyllic tropical gardens
What are the benefits of your location?
Spread across one hundred acres of lush tropical rainforest with spectacular views of the sparkling Caribbean Sea, Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, rests under the gaze of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Pitons. You cannot find a more picturesque and tranquil location to truly enjoy a slice of Caribbean paradise.
What is the most luxurious suite in the hotel?
We have a stunning collection of unique villas, bungalows and residences that create a perfect harmony between nature and modern living to our guests. Choosing one as a favourite would be nearly impossible, but one of my top contenders would be our ‘Luxury Beachfront Bungalows’. Guests can step right out of the bungalows into the soft sand of Sugar Beach and soak in all the magical views and within moments plunge into the warming depths of the Caribbean Sea.
What can you tell us about the history of the hotel?
Formerly a working sugar plantation, the property has had a fascinating and long history of owners including Lord Glenconner, famously known for his friendship with Princess Margaret. It was Glenconner who first transformed the land into a resort which was then called ‘Jalousie Plantation Resort’ and it welcomed many Royals and Celebrities through its doors. From then the ownership has changed a handful of times before becoming Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort in 2012.
Could you tell us about the best event the hotel has hosted during your time there?
The resort has some of the most iconic event spaces and versatile venues making any occasion truly memorable and special. We have been fortunate enough to host some of the most spectacular weddings and celebrations on property including Matt Damon’s celebrity-filled vow renewal.
How would you describe the hotel’s dining experience?
From the finest international cuisine to more casual tropical flavours, guests can choose between nine different restaurant and bars which showcase exceptional culinary offerings. From ‘Bonté’ our beachfront restaurant, meaning ‘good times’ in the local language Creole, to ‘Cane Bar’, a perfect evening spot offering south-east Asian tasting plates and a selection of cocktails to wash it down with, or head to our signature restaurant ‘Saltwood’ to immerse into a menu with some of the finest cuts of beef you can find.
Of all the facilities the hotel offers, which is your favourite?
The facilities on offer at Sugar Beach are second to none. Utilising our surroundings, my favourites would be our Rainforest Spa with secluded treehouses as the treatment rooms as well as the vast water sport offerings we have on site, including a full PADI dive facility and some of the best diving locations in the world.
What makes a stay at your venue stand out from your competitors?
The location simply has to be one of the most unique features about the property taking prime position on the island but what makes the hotel the standout success it is today is down to the passion and dedication from every team member. The aim is to create a guest experience that they will never want to end through our service, accommodation, facilities and amenities.
What packages are you offering for 2023?
We have a great mix of offers available to book this year, perfect for family getaways or for those more romantic celebrations for couples. Both our ‘Caribbean Escapes’ and ‘Home Sweet Home’ offer a generous discount off the best available rate and include daily breakfast in an array of accommodations. Our new ‘food for thought’ offer is ideal for the foodies as it includes our all-inclusive Sugar Beach meal plan so you can fully indulge and make the most of our delectable dining experiences.
Our Experience
Our trip to Sugar Beach, St Lucia was an unforgettable experience that surpassed all expectations.
The lush tropical surroundings, pristine sandy beaches and crystal clear sea water create an idyllic setting for relaxation and rejuvenation. The accommodation of villas and suites are nothing short of exceptional. Our spacious villa featured a private plunge pool and a terrace overlooking the ocean with our private butler who ensured we had everything we needed during our stay. We had the pleasure of dining at Salt Wood Restaurant in the evenings and Bonte Restaurant during the day; both are a must! We also enjoyed a trip to Sugar Beach Spa by Cinq Mondes which is by far the best spa we have experienced.
Whether seeking a romantic getaway or a family escape, Sugar Beach offers a truly remarkable destination for anyone seeking paradise in the Caribbean.
