Moody's: A Lasting Legacy

In celebration of the upcoming 150th anniversary, Carl Moody reflects on the rich history of his family-owned and operated jewellers in the beautiful Cheshire town of Nantwich

For more than 142 years, the Moody’s have dedicated their time to serving the people of Cheshire. Their brand new showroom houses a treasure trove of timeless one-off pieces and exquisite jewellery.

The family-run jewellers, based on Pillory Street in Nantwich, specialise in one-of-a-kind gemstones carefully selected for their rarity, beauty and durability, stunning engagement rings and beautifully designed bespoke creations.

Moody’s have worked alongside the finest jewellery designers for over 4 generations and their current collection showcases jewellery from FOPE, Mikimoto, Serafino Consoli, Georg Jensen and Deakin & Francis.

Here, Company Director, Carl Moody, reflects on the company’s success and looks forward to the company’s upcoming 150th anniversary.

Our Legacy

Charles Moody founded his optician and jewellery business in Crewe back in 1883 at No. 6 High Street. The combination of the two trades was not uncommon in those days and we still have a box of assorted glass eyes in our archive!

Business flourished, and in 1898 they moved to the top of High Street where Moody's remained until 1999.

In between times, Frank Moody became the 2nd generation of the family to join the company, taking over in 1941. Moody's played a large and interesting part during WW2 when they enlarged workshops to accommodate watchmakers tasked with repairing Omega watches used by R.A.F. pilots and navigators.

In 1947 Frank’s son Peter became the 3rd generation to enter the business, running the shop with his wife Olive and with his son Carl, now Managing Director. Moody's left Crewe for the beautiful town of Nantwich in 1999.

Nantwich boasted the highest percentage of independent retailers in any market town in a 2004 Daily Telegraph survey and the town has remained robust and busy when many high streets have struggled.

Moody's – The Next Chapter

2023 marked the 140th anniversary of Moody's now established as one of the leading independent jewellers in the country. In 2024 the shop underwent a fantastic full re-fit giving us a bright, welcoming and contemporary environment for our customers, heralded by the wonderful new Moody's clock over the shopfront.

Moody's Clock

This was made especially for us by the Cumbria Clock Company who were responsible for the restoration and upkeep of the famous clock commonly known as Big Ben in the Houses of Parliament.
