Naturalmat are setting the bar for circularity across the bed and mattress industry
Sustainability has long been at the forefront of interior design, with today’s consumers taking into consideration not just how products are made and what materials are used, but also how they can be responsibly repurposed or disposed of at the end of their life.
Devon-based bed and mattress makers and pioneers in sustainable design, Naturalmat are widely recognised for their innovative approach to circularity. As the UK’s first bed and mattress brand to offer a refurbishment service - with their Bed and Mattress for Life Initiatives™ - their responsible approach to furniture extends far beyond production, offering customers a more conscious way to enhance the life of their investment while reducing landfill waste. Their efforts have recently been honoured with the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainability, celebrating more than 25 years of sustainable manufacturing.
Mattress for Life Initiative™
As the first bed and mattress brand in the UK to introduce a service like this, the Mattress for Life Initiative™ launched in 2022 has become a key part of Naturalmat’s long-term sustainability strategy.
Offering three unique options, customers are encouraged to make a conscious choice on whether their mattress is refurbished, recycled or donated at the end of its life.
For those opting for refurbishment, skilled craftsman will carefully restore the mattress by replacing any worn or compressed fibres, before adding a brand new breathable cover. If recycling is preferred, the mattress is fully deconstructed, with its materials cleaned and treated using specialist machinery before being repurposed into new products such as cushions or a dog bed.
Finally, mattresses that remain in good condition can be collected and professionally cleaned in the world’s first mattress washing machine before being donated to one of Naturalmat’s charitable partners.
As highlighted in the 2026 impact report, the initiative has already enabled the recycling of over 2,490 mattresses to date.
Bed for Life Initiative™
Closing the loop even further, the introduction of the Bed for Life Initiative™ in 2025 allows homeowners to refresh their existing headboard or bed from Naturalmat without buying an entirely new style. Mirroring the mattress initiative, the service offers the same three options: refurbish, recycle or donate.
Not only is a full quality check offered to ensure all of the filling remains intact, but the specialist team is also able to reupholster the headboard in a fabric of the customers choosing, allowing for a complete bedroom redesign without the need for a new bed.
Healthy, climate-friendly materials
As an eco-conscious business with healthy, breathable sleep at its heart, Naturalmat is committed to using natural and organic materials with robust certifications such as GOTS and FSC. Each material is carefully selected not only for its quality and comfort but for its end of life impact, being either biodegradable or fully recycled to ensure nothing goes to landfill.
Another element to their manufacturing process is to minimise waste, where possible offcuts are thoughtfully repurposed for example, wool is collected and reused while denim offcuts are incorporated into headboard designs, giving new life to materials that might otherwise be discarded.
In addition to using sustainable materials, Naturalmat works with local farmers buying organic wool directly from those on their doorstep in the south west. One of the many benefits to organic wool, as noted in the latest impact report is that it generates 90% fewer emissions compared to conventional wool making it a sustainable and more health-conscious option.
