Spotlight On: Rosa's Thai Cafe, Liverpool

Best for...Authentic Thai dishes to share in groups

I recently spent a very pleasant afternoon in Rosas Thai Café situated in the heart of Liverpool’s historic waterfront, The Albert Dock. The café is set amongst a collection of beautifully restored grade I listed warehouses with striking views across the waterfront. This area of Liverpool offers you a chance to step back in time and imagine what this part of the city was able to offer in bygone times as so much of the character of the buildings have been maintained and it is easy to imagine how important the docks were for storage of valuable cargoes such cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar.

I visited Rosas Thai Café with two of my friends at lunchtime; we had booked in advance and on arrival were immediately shown to our table by a very pleasant waitress. We had full view of the busy open plan kitchen from our table and the aromas and smells drifting our way were mouth-watering. Drinks were ordered (I opted for the refreshing Appe-Thai- Zing) and delivered to our table almost immediately and our waitress very quickly pointed out that we could spice up our dishes or tone them down depending on our tastes.

We chose to order our starters and delayed ordering our main course until later, there was never a sense of urgency and we were left to enjoy our food and our catch up throughout the afternoon without ever feeling rushed. We tackled our starters of Sweetcorn Patties, Grilled Sausage (Northern Style) and Spring Rolls with Gusto.

The waitress explained the spicy and aromatic sausages were made with pork and kaffir lime leaves and were a classic recipe from the north of Thailand.

For our mains, we shared Pork Skewers which came marinated in honey, soy and roasted coriander seeds and served with a beautiful tamarind dip. They were very incredibly succulent and flavoursome. We also ordered the Grilled Chicken with Lemon Grass which was lovely and tender as well as the Stir-Fried Aubergine with yellow bean, chilli, soya sauce & sweet basil.

All of our food was served in the middle of the table which allowed us to sample everything on offer this I particularly enjoyed, I am one of those people who always wishes I had ordered what the other person is having and having our food presented in this way meant I didn’t feel I was missing out. We then had fresh mango and Ice cream for dessert, the mango was perfect, lovely and refreshing after the wonderful spicy flavours of our starters and mains.

Overall the service was friendly and efficient and the food was lovely and tasty. I also loved the informal setting and not forgetting the lovely dockside views perfect for when you want to share some good quality Thai food with your friends and family.  As an added bonus once you have finished eating there is always the opportunity to visit the Tate Gallery, the Maritime Museum or the Beatles Story which are all just a short walk away from Rosas café.
