Weekend Away : Rockliffe Hall

Michael Gates enjoyed a break at a five-star luxury golf and spa hotel in Darlington

Location

Set in the quiet village of Hurworth, on the edge of the County Durham and North Yorkshire border, Rockliffe Hall’s location is perfect for discovering the treasures of Durham city, the drama of the North East coastline and the rugged beauty of the North Yorkshire moors. Dating back to the 1800s, the once private estate is steeped in history with all the indulgent extras of a country retreat.

Rooms

Rockliffe Hall offers the most elegant and luxurious hotel rooms in County Durham with each of the 61 bedrooms looking out onto the beautiful golf course and surrounding countryside. The belief is that bedrooms should be about relaxing so all guest bedrooms are big on space, big on comfort, and big on little luxuries. From the super king-size beds, Villeroy & Boch bathtubs, to the ‘Tile TVs’ in the crisp, modern and spacious bathrooms, you will be surrounded by indulgence.

Spa and Golf

The Spa Garden experience is a luxurious addition to the award-winning 50,000 square feet Spa at Rockliffe Hall, blending indoors and outdoors for when you need an extra touch of tranquillity. Soak in the 365 acre estate in the warm infinity edge outdoor pool whilst experiencing different pressures of hydrotherapy massage, alternatively relax on the heated tile loungers or relaxing day beds. You can also take a swing on one of England’s best golf courses, designed by Hawtree, the world-renowned course architects.

Restaurants

Experience a unique culinary journey in Rockliffe Hall's flagship 3AA Rosette Orangery restaurant which offers an unrivalled dining experience, garden-to-plate ethos and exceptional wine pairings from some of the world’s most exquisite vineyards. Or there is the newly refurbished Clubhouse Kitchen and Bar, the perfect venue for tucking into popular and wholesome British classics or enjoying drinks on the terrace, whilst taking in stunning views across the golf course.

Personal Experience

I can confidently say Rockliffe is one of the best spa hotels I have ever visited. The venue is breathtaking, the rooms are stunning and the service was consistently outstanding from the moment I arrived. My first highlight was the Spa and Spa Garden, my bespoke warm oil massage was out of this world and the Spa facilities were fantastic. My second highlight was dining at the Orangery, the tasting menu was incredible and paired perfectly with wines served by the very knowledgeable and charming sommelier Derick. If you haven’t heard about Rockliffe Hall before I strongly recommend you add it to your list of places to visit, you won’t be disappointed.
