Weekend Away - Rookery Hall
One year on from their luxury wedding, Dave and Kate Poynton returned to Cheshire’s Rookery Hall to reflect on their magical day and enjoy the venue without the added pressure of saying ”I Do”
We were very much looking forward to our stay at Rookery Hall as this would be our first night away since the lifting of restrictions, and it did not disappoint. On our approach into Rookery Hall we were greeted with a grand driveway and perfectly mown lawns. The original 19th Century stately country house soon appears and strikes you with its historic beauty. Built in 1816 for the wealthy William Hilton Cooke, Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa has continued to move with the times. In 1867 the ‘French chateau’ tower was added, in 1990 a new wing was created and in 2007 the property was enhanced with a health club and spa, stylish new executive bedrooms and conference and banqueting centre.
Our check-in was smooth, and it was reassuring to see the new Covid secure measures in place. We were happy to see we had been booked to stay in the same (June) Suite that we shared on our wedding night only a year previously. The memories came flooding back as we shared a bottle of fizz. The June Suite was spacious and can be found in the Old Hall. Its large original windows are perfect for soaking up the views of the back gardens, fountain lawn and Cheshire countryside. The large bedroom came with a seating area and original features, aswell as useful amenities including air conditioning which was very welcomed on the warm sunny day we stayed.
On the way to the spa we decided to explore the vast well-kept grounds of Rookery Hall, an instant calm came over us both, a potentially overlooked asset of silence, came into play. No noise from cars or traffic, no noise from machinery. Just the occasional call from the resident Rooks.
Once we reached the spa, we were greeted with a modern reception area that flowed through to the poolside where we enjoyed a relaxing swim and some time in the hydrotherapy pool before our evening meal. Again, we were impressed by the social distancing measures put in place in the spa to ensure you felt safe, calm and very relaxed.
Before our evening meal we enjoyed a drink outside on the terrace further admiring the peace, quiet and tranquillity of Rookery Hall’s fountain lawn. For our meal we enjoyed a delicious tasting menu of many courses paired with matching wines, each dish was presented excellently, and the wines matched perfectly. We were treated to so many different flavours in the many courses finishing off with a delightful strawberry soufflé, that was to die for. The dining experience was equal only to the stunning dining room with its ornate Jacobean wood panelling walls and decretive ceiling. Our experience lasted for an enjoyable two and a half hours before we retired to the lounge bar.
The lounge bar has recently been moved and has been designed with more space in mind, the furnishings are modern but do not compromise the history of the room. Here we enjoyed a couple of gin & tonic’s which we sipped on at a leisurely pace before turning in for the night.
The next morning, we woke feeling refreshed after an excellent night’s sleep and made our way down for breakfast. We sat in the same dining room we had the night before overlooking the picturesque fountain lawn. For breakfast we had Eggs Benedict and a Traditional Full English breakfast. The Hollandaise sauce for the Eggs Benedict was among the best I had experienced. And for the Full English Rookery Hall’s own pork sausage was one to remember.
Checkout seemed to come all too soon as while at Rookery Hall time seems to stand still. If you are looking for a place that lets you forget about the rest of the world while indulging in luxury, then Rookery Hall is the place for you.
