Your Next Day Out Is Just A Train Ride Away with Transport for Wales
More trains than ever along the North Wales Coast Line
It’s time to return to a simpler kind of summer. The kind that doesn’t need itineraries, a boarding pass printed out at the eleventh hour, and meticulous logistical planning that would rival a military operation.
This summer, Transport for Wales is introducing one of the most significant timetable changes in a generation along the North Wales Coast Line.
The upgraded timetable strengthens links between the North Wales Coast and Liverpool via Chester, with around 50% more train services and more regular journeys.
What does that mean for me, we hear you ask?
Your commute, day trip, hike, or staycation is all about to feel a lot smoother, as the journey becomes part of the experience.
Let someone else do the driving for once. Time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the rolling hills along the Welsh countryside. We’re talking mountains, stretched sandy beaches, and medieval castles just outside your window... and when you step off the train, those same views are still right there waiting for you.
No parking faff or fees, no stopping for fuel and no traffic.
Things to do, places to be, people to see
Among the stations that are seeing a major upgrade are popular haunts for families, history buffs, bikers, hikers, and everything (and everyone) in between.
Visit Llandudno
One of the UK’s best preserved Victorian seaside towns, you’ll want to stop at Llandudno for that nostalgic, timeless quality – it’s a great example of what the British seaside used to be.
The pier is actually the second longest in Wales, jutting out from a sweeping promenade along the shorefront.
Llandudno sits between two headlands, the Great Orme and the Little Orme, making for a particularly distinctive, dramatic landscape. The Great Orme is a spectacular limestone headland, rising 207m above the sea and offering breathtaking views of Snowdonia, Anglesey, and the Irish Bay.
You can walk, tram or cable car up to the top of Great Orme, where ancient copper mines and roaming Kashmir goats await.
The beauty of the Welsh language makes it imperative that you take a photo next to the welcome sign for Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (or Llanfair PG for short) if you’re continuing along the line.
Visit Prestatyn
If all you know about sunny Prestatyn is from the Philip Larkin poem, we’re happy to report there’s more to see.
Only a very straightforward train from Chester, Prestatyn is an unpretentious coastal gem. Sitting at the northern end of Offa's Dyke Path – one of Britain's great long-distance trails – walking enthusiasts might already be familiar with it.
You could also skip the hiking boots (no judgement here) and head straight for the beach. Long, sandy, and Blue Flag-certified, Prestatyn’s shoreline and the Nova Centre on the seafront tick every box, and if the weather turns – this is Britain, after all – the Scala theatre and cinema in town makes for a perfect plan B.
