Katie Barrell visited The Lowry Theatre in Salford to watch Robert Ickeโs adaptation of the George Orwell classic, Animal Farm
First published in 1945, it is a testament to the work of George Orwell how relevant Animal Farm is today.
A reflection of communism, Animal Farm is often considered a modern fairy tale.
Down on Manor Farm the animals prepare for the revolution and take control. The world they create seems to be an idyllic society where animals are equal. However as the play develops Orwellโs characters show how the balance of power shifts, the rules of society change to suit the needs of those who seize control.
As we consider the characters, which would you be, the leader snowball, the worker Boxer, Barbara the chicken or Muriel the wise old goat?
This new adaption written and directed by Robert Icke, with puppetry designed and directed by Toby Olie, provides a fresh interpretation of a classic.
The captive audience of all ages at the Lowry theatre was treated to 90 minutes of theatre at its best.
