Life & Mindset Coach Jo Irving on the weight of running a business

When you run a company, you’re not just responsible for strategy and growth. You’re often holding the energy of the whole team, managing finances, making decisions constantly, and thinking three steps ahead. It’s a huge cognitive and emotional load that many people underestimate.

One of the biggest shifts I encourage founders to make is moving from operating like an entrepreneur to thinking like a CEO.

Entrepreneurs often stay in the doing. They say yes to everything, stay available all the time, and try to solve every problem themselves. CEOs understand that their job is to protect their energy, create clear boundaries, and focus on the areas where they bring the most value.

Without that shift, burnout becomes almost inevitable.

Another key area is decision fatigue. Business owners make hundreds of decisions every week, often without even noticing it. When your brain is constantly in problem-solving mode, your nervous system never really gets a chance to reset. Over time this creates a state of chronic stress.

Simple daily practices that regulate the nervous system can make a huge difference. Breathwork, short walks, stepping away from screens, or even a few minutes of stillness can help bring the body back into balance. It’s not about adding more to the to-do list, but about creating small moments where the brain can switch out of survival mode.

Boundaries are another important piece. Many founders struggle with this, particularly in people-focused industries where relationships are central to the business. But sustainable leadership requires protecting your time and energy. When leaders are exhausted, the business inevitably feels it.

One of the most powerful things a CEO can do is create space to think. When founders are constantly reacting to emails, messages and operational tasks, they lose the ability to step back and lead strategically.

True leadership requires perspective, and perspective requires space.

Ultimately, building a successful business shouldn’t come at the cost of your health or your life outside work. Sustainable success comes from alignment. When leaders understand their own values, manage their energy, and focus on the right things, the business grows in a way that is both profitable and sustainable.

It’s not about doing less, it’s about leading differently.
