Amy Wright, Founder of Londe Botanics takes a look at how to conquer insomnia and get the best night's sleep

I’ve been an insomniac for much of my life; struggling to fall asleep, waking in the early hours and then battling fatigue throughout the next day.

It wasn't until I discovered self-care using aromatic botanical oils that I began to embrace evening relaxation routines. These gentle practices had such a powerful effect on my sleep and wellbeing that I became fascinated and decided to create my own.

Using oil to anoint the skin is one of the oldest human rituals and is found in almost all cultures, from ancient Egypt to modern day royal coronations. Touch is powerfully soothing and massaging the skin can increase serotonin to help maintain the sleep cycle.

Natural aromatics are also excellent alternatives to promote the onset of sleep. Chamomile has long been known for its calming effects, rosemary is a mood enhancer and lavender is shown to lower cortisol levels and promote feelings of wellbeing.

Our skincare and aromatherapy oils are blended from 100% UK grown botanicals to give a purely natural, locally-grown experience, but you can use other types of oil such as almond or softened coconut oil, scented with a couple of drops of essential oils.

Some of my favourite bedtime rituals include:

  • A hot bath with a few drops of our lavender and rosemary Botanic Body Oil (add magnesium flakes to ease muscle tension)

  • A gentle facial oil massage to finish an evening beauty routine. Our Botanic Evening Oil with starflower, chamomile and lavender is a divine way to help you drift to sleep and awaken with beautifully nourished skin.

  • A gentle foot or hand massage with a body oil, either from yourself or a partner, to stimulate acupressure points associated with sleep, including the outer wrist and just beneath the ball of the foot.

  • Finally, an aromatherapy pulse point oil such as our Stillness Oil kept on your bedside table can be used to enhance breathing exercises or pre-sleep meditation.

I still have nights where I struggle to sleep but having these nurturing rituals to return to is a saviour, particularly during lockdown, and I love hearing that our oils have helped others. Wishing you sweet dreams and peaceful nights ahead.
