Matthew O’Brien - Owner of Fashion Label Matthew O’Brien

Chester’s multi award-winning fashion designer offers clients a ready to wear collection, bespoke womenswear and menswear and a bridal collection at his flagship store in Chester.

What inspired you to get into fashion?

I have always been interested in electronics and robotics from a really young age and was interested in the manufacturing of fashion. My transition in to fashion design came about later. As I learnt more about manufacturing I started to get really inspired by the fashion design itself and this passion grew.

Which designers do you admire?

I have always admired and been inspired by Hussein Chalayan. His work manages to use wearable technology and unconventional materials. I also admire Gareth Pugh who is futuristic and combines strong silhouettes and strong colour palettes.

What are your top career highlights so far?

  • Being named UK Young Fashion Designer of the Year in 2016

  • Working in the Philippines as judge and mentor on the television programme Design Genius

  • Working with Rihanna on Style to Rock for Living TV

  • My most recent highlight has to be opening our flagship showroom in November, in Chester on the famous Row

What does the future have in store for you?

I have some very exciting plans for my brand but at the moment I’m focusing on my annual fashion show on 7th June which will be the biggest and best yet.
