James Doak, Founder and CEO of Padel Sheds on why padel is replacing the gym and rebuilding community

The rapid rise of padel across the UK is no longer a quiet trend; it’s a full-scale movement reshaping how people think about sport, fitness and social connection. Few people have witnessed this transformation as closely as James Doak, Founder and CEO of Padel Sheds, whose indoor facility in Chester has become a focal point for the sport’s explosive growth.

When Padel Sheds opened its doors in September last year, there was little indication of just how quickly the sport would capture the imagination of the local community. Fast forward just seven months, and the venue has not only exceeded expectations but helped spark a cultural shift, introducing thousands of people to a sport that didn’t even exist in the city until recently.

“Seeing what’s happened in such a short space of time has been incredible,” says James. “We’ve gone from zero to a thriving, vibrant community. It’s not just about sport, it’s about connection, health and enjoyment.”

A Sport for Everyone

One of the defining features of padel is its accessibility. Unlike many traditional racquet sports, it doesn’t demand years of technical training to enjoy. According to James, that’s a key reason behind its universal appeal.

“Absolutely anyone can pick up a racquet and have fun within minutes,” he explains. “We’ve got children playing, parents playing, and even grandparents joining in. It’s genuinely multi-generational.”

This inclusivity has helped padel break down barriers that often exist in sport. Families are playing together more than ever, with courts regularly filled by mixed-age groups enjoying competitive but friendly matches. It’s not uncommon to see three generations sharing the same court, something rarely achieved in other sports.

Addictive by Nature

Ask anyone who’s tried padel, and one word comes up time and again: addictive.

“There’s something about it that just hooks people,” says James. “People come down for a casual game and before they know it, they’re booking courts multiple times a week.”

Part of this comes from the unique gameplay. Played on an enclosed court with glass walls that keep rallies alive longer, padel creates a fast-paced, engaging experience that keeps players constantly involved. The learning curve is quick, but mastery takes time, striking a perfect balance that keeps players coming back.

“It’s enjoyable from day one,” James adds. “You don’t need to be brilliant to have a brilliant time.”

Health, Fitness and a Shift Away from the Gym

As the UK continues to evolve in its approach to health and wellbeing, padel is emerging as a compelling alternative to traditional fitness routines.

“We’re seeing a lot of people who’ve replaced gym sessions with padel,” James notes. “You’re getting a full-body workout without it feeling like hard work.”

The sport combines cardiovascular exercise, agility, coordination, and strength, all within a social and engaging environment. Players often spend hours on court without realising how much exercise they’re getting.

“It’s fitness disguised as fun,” says James. “And that’s why it works.”

A Social Revolution

Perhaps the most powerful aspect of padel’s rise isn’t physical, it’s social.

At Padel Sheds, the sport has become a catalyst for building relationships and community. Because matches are typically played in doubles, players are constantly rotating partners and opponents, creating opportunities to meet new people every time they step onto the court.

“Padel is incredibly sociable by design,” James explains. “You’re always interacting, always meeting someone new. It’s not like going to the gym where you might not speak to anyone.”

This dynamic has led to the rapid formation of a close-knit community in Chester, something James is particularly proud of.

“In just seven months, we’ve seen genuine friendships form. People who didn’t know each other before are now playing together regularly, socialising outside the club, even going on holidays together,” he says. “That’s been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.”

More Than Just a Sport

The success of Padel Sheds isn’t confined to the courts. The venue has also cultivated a strong social atmosphere through its coffee shop and bar, which serve as gathering points before and after matches.

“We’ve created a really healthy social environment,” says James. “People come for the sport, but they stay for the community.”

Whether it’s a post-match coffee, a casual drink, or simply a place to unwind, these spaces have become integral to the overall experience, reinforcing the idea that padel is as much about connection as it is competition.

All-Weather Appeal

Another factor driving padel’s popularity is its year-round accessibility. As an indoor facility, Padel Sheds allows players to enjoy the sport regardless of the famously unpredictable British weather.

“That’s been huge for us,” James explains. “Rain or shine, people know they can play. It removes one of the biggest barriers to staying active in the UK.”

This reliability has helped players build consistent routines, further contributing to the sport’s addictive nature and long-term appeal.

A Growing Footprint

Following the overwhelming success of its Chester location, Padel Sheds is already looking ahead. Plans are underway for two new sites in North Wales and Altrincham, both currently in the planning permission stage. In addition, three more locations across the North West are in the pipeline for later this year.

“We always believed in the potential of padel,” says James. “But the response has exceeded anything we could have imagined. Now it’s about bringing this experience to more communities.”

Transforming a City

Beyond business growth, James believes padel has had a meaningful impact on Chester itself.

“This is something that didn’t exist here not long ago,” he reflects. “Now it’s a huge part of people’s lives. It’s brought people together, improved health and wellbeing, and created a real sense of community.”

As padel continues to expand across the UK, stories like Chester’s are becoming increasingly common. What started as a niche sport is rapidly evolving into a national phenomenon, one that blends fitness, fun, and friendship in a way few others can match.

And if James Doak’s experience is anything to go by, this is only the beginning.
