Q&A with... Jack Few, Owner of Jack Few Fine Art

Can you tell us about your journey to the arts?

Some of my earliest memories were those of scribbling away on whatever surfaces I could get my little hands on. I used to be a drawer of things and I feel this set the scene for my creative output. My evolution to painting was a long and winding road. I studied Fine Art and English Literature at The University of Chester, a wonderful establishment with some very inspiring teachers and afterwards decided to dedicate a handful of years travelling. I hit the open road with my bike and travelled the length of India and crossed Europe all the way to Asia along the Silk Road in a truly minimal and liberating form of travel. After I returned, and following several tedious jobs, I landed a studio, a small audience and, with a lot of inspiration, started painting.

For those unfamiliar with your work, how would you describe it?

I would say my work falls under the theme of abstract expressionism, which says what it does in the title; it’s all about expression! I aim to charge different surfaces with paint that informs new worlds revealing themselves. I don’t like to paint things that already exist. I see them as strips of memory and emotion exaggerated and enhanced into motion. They come from a gut feeling that urges to tease out a story that’s already there and I activate myself to rouse and channel it. Music’s integral to the process. It’s this freshness and energy that my collectors relish and introduce into their home space to transform it.

What is your creative process?

I work in a very intuitive and fluid way; I have no idea what the painting is going to look like when I start. I use impulsive symbols and gestural marks which are subliminally placed and any paint that calls out to me in the moment. The work is trying to speak for itself and tease its way out. It’s a language I action before I understand it. I love to play in that mystery. Scraping, scratching, layering, thinning, brushing, etching, writing, in as many playful ways as possible.

Tell us about your Abstract Painting Workshops that take place at your studio in Chester.

My workshops are essentially a crash course in abstract painting. No previous painting experience is necessary at all, it’s an open platform for all ages and skill levels, and most importantly, they’re fun! We explore thoroughly the creative process of painting, play and self-expression that abstract painting is all about.

You have a range of exciting pop up exhibitions and β€˜meet and greet’ events planned for the summer - what can people expect?
