Strictly Ballroom The Musical

Strictly Ballroom The Musical

Katie Barrell visited the Lowry Theatre in Salford to watch the highly anticipated Strictly Ballroom The Musical

The highly anticipated Strictly Ballroom The Musical has arrived at the Lowry Theatre and we were very excited to be given the opportunity to watch the opening night! As soon as we entered the theatre you could feel the electric atmosphere and the excitement of the audience before the voice of Craig Revel Horwood - who directed and co-choreographed the show - silenced the audience. He invited everyone to sit back and enjoy the show while also setting the scene.

The opening took us into the world of competitive ballroom dancing and introduced us to the story's characters. The scenes, music, dancing and of course, the costumes were utterly beautiful and whisked you away into their world.

Kevin Clifton best known for being a professional dancer on the TV show Strictly Come Dancing played the lead, Scott Hastings. He did not disappoint.  His charisma shone through and you could see that he was on stage living his dream, playing a character he was born to play. Faye Brookes, best known for her role in Coronation Street, played opposite him as Fran. She was the perfect partner and she had the audience willing her on, to achieve her dream to dance with Scott on the professional stage.

As the story grows around these two so does their relationship. I was blown away by Rico played by Jose Agudo and his perfection while performing the flamenco. The audience all clapped and cheered on the cast during this scene which was a true spectacle.

This show surprised me throughout, having known the film as a child to see how they have adapted this onto the stage was mind-blowing. Well done to all the cast and crew who have managed to tell this story with heart, comedy and wonderful dancing this was sublime.

The show is playing at the Lowry theatre until Sunday 1st July and is one not to be missed.
