Summer of Love: How Outdoor Experiences Can Strengthen Your Relationship
WORDS: Alex Mellor-Brook, Dating and Relationship Coach, Co-founder at Select Personal Introductions
One thing we all discovered during the pandemic was that even a short walk in the woods can create a genuine sense of well-being. We learned that being out in nature, without the nag of text and email, allows us to really relax.
We connect with the world around us through all our senses. And we connect differently to the people weβre out in nature with, which is a fantastic way to add new dimensions to your relationship.
The science behind outdoor romance
Heather Eliassen, ScD, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, reported in 2024 that sleep, blood pressure, and physical ability are all enhanced by spending time in green spaces. That sounds like a recipe for romance to me, but itβs not just our general health that benefits (although βphysical abilityβ sounds like something thatβs bound to improve any physical relationship); itβs also about the thrill of being outdoors.
Even relaxed outdoor activities give us a thrill - a beach getaway is likely to do just as much for us as climbing a mountain because being in nature causes us to release endorphins, the same mood boosters that our body produces when we fall in love. So, combining time with our partner with time outdoors is likely to amplify our feel-good factor, which is always good.
Location, location, location
Water-based adventures deepen these romantic experiences - thereβs excitement and activity, glorious sunsets (or sunrises), maybe the sea breeze, and the chance of spotting amazing wildlife (even on city rivers you can see seabirds and waterfowl) all of which gives you the chance to reignite your joint sense of wonder and camaraderie.
Thereβs another reason to consider outdoor time if youβre in a relationship where youβre creating a blended family. Outdoor adventures can help your new family bond. There are three reasons for this:
#1 - Whether youβre white-water rafting or playing croquet on the lawn of a stately home, thereβs a natural team-building energy that allows people to get to know each other faster.
#2 - Thereβs a lack of control about being outdoors: weather, temperature, unexpected sights, new experiences. When no one person is in control of the environment the way they can be at home, everybody loses their inhibitions quicker and bond faster.
#3 - Memory creation is enhanced outdoors. Itβs almost impossible to remember much about a Netflix marathon with your family; but much easier to remember a picnic in the park or foraging in a forest, and these positive memories deepen our commitment to the relationships weβre building.
So whether youβre a gentle stroller who combines your leisurely walks with champagne brunches, an active water-baby who loves plunging into cold water followed by cosy saunas, or an avid foodie who gleans the natural environment, building outdoor activities into your romantic life offers a range of benefits that can only improve your connection to the one you love.
