The Beauty of Glass: Where Craft Meets Innovation
Structural glass experts Clear Living share a recent ambitious project where cutting-edge glass engineering meets timeless countryside architecture
This is our favourite type of brief. An ambitious client with a historic 16th century listed house wanting to build a large modern glazed extension of this time..
A most beautiful country house that has been in the same family for three generations. Extended in the 18th, 19th and early 20th century, each addition clearly reflecting architecture of that era.
Our client worked with award-winning The Classic Architecture Company who specialise in high quality restoration and new build projects. Working collaboratively a stunning bold design evolved.
The extension features a contemporary appearance in comparison to the original historic house. A high ceiling was introduced and huge expanses of glass used to create a multi-functional living room kitchen overlooking beautiful landscaped gardens and swimming pool. Part of the extension is a reimagined former outbuilding that brings the delight of an oak framed roof overhead as you transition from the new to the historic house. The interior décor is modern with a nod to tradition.
Homeowners often dismiss modern glazing on the basis it will be rejected by the Local Planners. One of the key principles in listed and heritage building glazing applications is making a clear distinction between old and new. Planners often prefer designs that are obviously modern interpretations rather than those that try to mimic traditional elements.
Sky-Frame glazing was installed to the side elevations, a bespoke Swiss sliding door system, which features slim profiles and allows a flush transition between inside and outside. The sliding doors were automated and alarm sensors incorporated which were all integrated with the client’s home automation system. The end glazed structural glazed panel was a huge 9 meters wide! The result was a crisp modern glass walled space filled with light.
