The Jeweller’s Christmas Edit with Hancocks of King Street

There is something about December that invites a little theatre. The twinkle of lights, the clink of glasses, the anticipation of beautifully wrapped gifts, it’s no wonder the allure of jewellery, more than anything else, captures that feeling. It is intimate, expressive and deliciously indulgent. So, this year, as we searched for the pieces that define the season, we turned to Hancocks of King Street, the Manchester jeweller whose 165-year legacy has shaped countless celebrations.

Inside their boutique, the conversation began with pearls. Hancocks speak about them with a quiet affection, describing their soft luminosity as the “gentle light of winter”. A pearl and diamond bangle became the first piece to catch our eye, its smooth curve and subtle shimmer offering a sense of calm sophistication. Not far from it, a pair of pearl and diamond drop hoops danced lightly in the cabinet, each movement catching the glow of the room. They felt playful, elegant and wonderfully at ease with the season.

Colour, too, plays its part at Christmas. Hancocks guided us towards an emerald and diamond three stone ring with a green so vivid it seemed to hold its own kind of radiance. There was a similar sense of warmth in a natural fancy yellow diamond ring, its sunshine-like glow softened by the crisp winter light. Both pieces felt confident without shouting, a signature of the house.

For those drawn to the brilliance of diamonds alone, Hancocks offered a study in contrasts. A platinum bracelet set with more than five carats of diamonds sparkled with a kind of restrained opulence, the sort that reveals its beauty slowly rather than all at once. Its counterpart, a pair of single stone Asscher cut earrings, had a cool architectural stillness. There was a serenity to their geometry that made them instantly captivating.

Eternity rings and clusters brought a more romantic mood into the room. An 18ct. yellow gold half eternity ring felt intimate and understated, the kind of piece that becomes part of the wearer rather than something they simply put on. In contrast, a radiant cut cluster ring offered a burst of celebratory glamour, unmistakably festive but still refined.

Hancocks finished by showing us two pieces that seemed to bookend the season. Multi coloured sapphire and diamond hoops that sparkled with joyful energy and a cultured pearl necklet with a white gold clasp that carried the quiet elegance of a winter evening.

What becomes clear when you spend time at Hancocks is that their approach to jewellery is never about extravagance for its own sake. It is about feeling, craftsmanship and the stories that continue long after the gift has been given. As Christmas approaches, their selections remind us that the most treasured pieces are not only the ones that sparkle, but the ones that stay with us.
