Withington Girls’ School celebrate 95% A Level grades at A*- B
WGS class of 2023 demonstrate their breadth of talent
Year 13 students at Withington Girls’ School firmly demonstrated that their impressive range of talents beyond the curriculum are underpinned by strong academic credentials, with 95% of all grades achieved at A*- B and 31.2% at A* grade in the 2023 A Level examinations.
57% of the 68-strong cohort secured grades that included at least three grades at A or A*, with five students achieving a clean sweep of four A* grades. Around three in four grades (73.9%) were A or A*.
Headmistress, Mrs Sarah Haslam, paid tribute to the students who received their A Level results today: “The Class of 2023 leave Withington with a legacy of excellence in areas of school life as diverse as leadership roles, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Model United Nations, Young Enterprise and community involvement, with stellar performances on both the stage and the sports field. They include outstanding athletes, artists, writers, dancers and musicians as well as the two students who shared leads in the musical Sister Act, the school’s first major school production since 2019.”
Eight students from the Class of 2023 will join two 2022 leavers in taking up their well-earned places at Oxford and Cambridge, with the vast majority who applied securing their firm offer at prestigious universities across the UK and 18 students (26.5% of the cohort) beginning courses of study in Medicine and Dentistry.
Speaking of her time at Withington, outgoing Head Girl, Georgia Campbell, who achieved four A* grades and will study English Language and Literature at Queen’s College, Oxford, said: “My time at Withington has been an absolute joy. I’m so grateful to everyone for the support I’ve had along the way from the students, the teachers and everyone who keeps the school running. The girls are incredible, we are each other’s support system and I couldn’t have wished for a better group of people to help me through my journey.”
Maira Rana, who joined Withington in Year 12 from a local secondary school and will study Medicine at the University of St Andrews, said: “I wanted to move for Sixth Form to a school where there would be more academic challenges. One of the surprises for me has been the high level of pastoral support. I’ve found it offers a very different environment and I’ve really enjoyed the sense of community and how supportive everyone is. The teachers adapt their teaching style to suit each individual’s learning style and to help them overcome whatever difficulties they may have. When I first joined Withington, I wasn’t sure what to expect but everyone was very warm and welcoming. Some of the best friendships I’ve made have been at Withington and they will be my friends for life.”
After attending Withington’s Junior School, Ranvitha Chaparala attended a grammar school before returning to Withington for Sixth Form. A successful dancer who has been a member of the National Youth Ballet, Ranvitha achieved four A*s and will study Economics at Churchill College, Cambridge. She said: “I feel the driving factor of my success has been the support from the Withington school community of teachers, staff, peers and career advisors. They have genuinely gone above and beyond. Withington has kept me grounded in times of stress and has inspired me to also inspire myself in times when I have found it difficult.”
Mrs Haslam said: “Today we were privileged to be able to gather to celebrate with students and their parents the conclusion to their senior school journeys. For some this journey started in our Junior School, while others joined us as recently as Sixth Form. We are so very proud of them all and thank them for their tremendous contribution to school life during their time at Withington.”
