The Merchant of Venice 1936 - The Lowry
Katie Barrell headed to The Lowry Quays Theatre to watch The Merchant of Venice 1936
We venture back to the political instability of 1936 as fascism sweeps across Europe, into a time that sees Oberman take on the matriarchal role of Shylock pitted against the fascists of London.
The play perfectly combines the traditional Shakespearean storyline with some more modern themes. The opening is very unique; the cast greets you and invites you to join them in Shabbat. There is a sense we are all part of something special from the very beginning, which continues throughout as the actors regularly use the auditorium as a route to the stage.
The story unfolds on the eve of the Battle of Cable Street; the use of chilling news reels of marginalised groups projected at regular intervals, makes you pause and reflect. At times the audience were so captivated by a remarkable cast you would be forgiven for forgetting you werenβt the only observer in the room.
Amongst the excellent cast, itβs the women that stand out; Evie Hargreaves as maid Mary shows the duality of comedy and cruelty, Georgie Fellow as Portia captivates with her portrayal of the strong, independent yet reliant lady of the house. Tracy-Ann is the jewel in the crown; her passion of the piece comes through, as the complexity of the character leads the audience to focus on what is right.
Leaving the West End to tour the UK following much acclaim, this production is so powerful this really is one not to miss!
